About the project
The Retail, Auxiliary, and Dining (RAD) Center is a new campus heart for the University of Houston, replacing an underground dining facility that was severely damaged during Hurricane Harvey.
The first mass timber project on campus, the RAD Center complements a striking wooden structure with inspiration drawn from the surrounding campus woodlands. Vertical façade rhythms, multi-story spatial overlaps, and upper story glass reflect the tree canopy and showcase the interior activity, blurring the threshold between inside and out. The result is a vertical beacon: an invite to “dine in the woods”.
Positioned as a “third place” outside of the home or classroom, the RAD Center infills an existing gap in the campus experience and master plan—creating a space where students are invited to gather, linger, eat, study, and be well.
