Participatory Environments with Alexis Sablone
What can skateboarding teach us about architecture and public space?
Join professional skateboarder, Olympian, architect, designer, and multidisciplinary artist Alexis Sablone for a fascinating conversation on how movement shapes the way we read, use, and reinterpret public space. One of the most influential figures in contemporary skateboarding, Sablone has built a career that bridges elite athletic performance, architecture, and public art—bringing a unique perspective to how cities can encourage creativity, play, and connection.
On Saturday, August 1, Sablone will discuss how the creative appropriation of urban environments can inspire more inclusive, playful, and dynamic cities.
Sablone holds a BA from Barnard College, Columbia University, and a Master of Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where they were both the Ida C. Green Fellow and recipient of the Imre Halasz Thesis Prize. Their work bridges architecture and skateboarding through the design of hybrid playscapes and large-scale interactive sculptures, investigating how public spaces can foster creativity, participation, and community. Skateboarding, they argue, offers designers a compelling model for understanding how shared public spaces can become beloved destinations for people of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.
Currently a fellow at the University of Chicago’s Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry, where Sablone co-taught a course on the intersections of skateboarding culture, performance, and urban space, Sablone brings a distinctive interdisciplinary perspective to the future of public design, inviting audiences to rethink how cities can encourage movement, play, and connection.
This program is presented in conjunction with The Kinetics of Urban Movement, on view at the Architecture Center Houston through September 26.
