History

This educational outreach committee is dedicated to the memory of Michael G. Meyers, a prominent Houston architect who passed away in 1988 at the age of 36. At the time, he was president-elect of the Houston Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and managing partner of Kirksey-Meyers Architects. According to his friend and business partner, “Mike gave us a standard by which to measure our own lives, and by meeting that standard we will collectively keep Mike’s spirit alive forever.”

In previous years, students have been asked to design a children’s museum, a light rail station, a nature center, and many other challenging projects. The Michael G. Meyers Committee (MGMC) makes every effort to recruit awards judges with unique qualifications that pertain to the specific design problem that the students are asked to solve. An awards program and exhibition are held in April to honor all of the participants and allow students to meet members of the design profession. Among many other benefits, this program gives motivated students, teachers, and parents an opportunity to interact with representatives of the architecture profession and share experiences with a diverse cross section of the Houston community.

Ultimately, the goal of this effort is to encourage creativity and recognize those who view design as a worthwhile endeavor.
