Advocacy and Permitting Committee

AIA Houston’s Advocacy Committee and Permitting Taskforce actively work to help promote the voice of over 2,000 local architects. By coming together we accomplish in our practices and our region that which no single architect can do alone. We are Architects in Action.

This committee focuses on local advocacy including code adoption, permitting, and all things relating to government affairs.

GENERAL ADVOCACY
We aim to be experts and a resource for city, county, and regional planning/design issues. We hope to be civic leaders by engaging in local committees, boards, and commissions.

CODE ADOPTION
Our committee members participate in the City’s Code Modernization process and help educate and inform AIA Houston members about upcoming code changes.

PERMITTING
The Permitting Taskforce meets with Building Code Enforcement (BCE) and Office of the City Engineer (OCE) on an as needed basis to discuss the permit process improvements and current issues our members are having. We work along side the city to help improve the permitting experience. We help firms troubleshoot projects having difficulties in permitting. We educate AIA members about upcoming changes in the permit process.

STATE LEVEL ADVOCACY
Although our advocacy focus is local, we do participate in state level advocacy by supporting the Texas Society of Architects Committee (TAC) and by attending Architects Day in Austin every other year during the Texas Legislative Session.
