The Warehouse at Turkey Bend is a major renovation effort transforming a former World War II-era industrial barge terminal warehouse along Houston’s Buffalo Bayou into a vibrant cultural and recreational destination. Part of a larger comprehensive plan, the initiative involves several other buildings and landscapes on Turkey Bend.
Further refining the Buffalo Bayou East Master Plan’s four Core Principles, “authentic,” “connected,” “inclusive & resilient,” the project team developed three site specific guiding principles. This innovative adaptive reuse project weaves the history of the site into design, from the preservation and adaptation of colorful graffiti to the restoration of existing materials and structural elements, to honor the industrial legacy of the neighborhood while providing the surrounding community with a new public space for gathering, economic development, and engagement. A primary goal of the project was to retain as much of the existing structure as possible and adapt it to public use.
Constructed in 1937 as a street-level shipping warehouse connected by tunnel to a waterfront barge terminal and wharf, the Warehouse at Turkey Bend has a storied history with deep connections to the industrial and cultural legacy of Houston’s East End. The Turkey Bend on Buffalo Bayou project is a key part of Buffalo Bayou Partnership’s Buffalo Bayou East Master Plan, creating new access to the waterway for the surrounding community and serving as a cultural hub for recreation, gathering, and commerce.
Sustainability for the Warehouse at Turkey Bend was approached from multiple perspectives: finance and economic benefit, environmental stewardship, and community impact. By utilizing diverse funding sources through public and private investment, the project transforms an unprogrammed and inaccessible property into a hub for community activity, education, and economic development. The flexible structure of the site accommodates a variety of uses, including retails spaces for local businesses, rentable venues for events and festivals, and a future home for the Houston Public Library’s Hispanic History Research Center. Re-imagining the existing building, preserving much of its original structure, and adapting it for new use provides a sustainable alternative to demolition, material waste, and starting from scratch. Landscaped gardens in front and the North Rail Garden in the rear of the building help with erosion prevention and habitat restoration by reducing pavement and incorporating native plants. Finally, opening the Warehouse at Turkey Bend as a public space allows for direct access to Buffalo Bayou and the broader green space and trail network for the neighboring communities, providing connections to downtown destinations and popular green spaces along its corridor.
