The Backyard Bungalow is a 760-square-foot accessory dwelling unit (ADU) thoughtfully tucked into the backyard of an existing home in the heart of the Houston Heights. Though modest in size, this compact dwelling delivers a spacious and uplifting experience through clever design, natural light, and strong emotional roots.
Designed for a retired sister of the homeowner, the bungalow is more than just a residence, it’s a shared chapter between siblings, built with the intention of closeness and daily connection. The two homes are linked by a shared outdoor patio that serves as a common gathering space for morning coffee and easy conversation.
Set on a corner lot, the ADU is almost completely hidden from the street, peeking out subtly at certain angles. Working with a narrow footprint of just 18 feet between the existing house and the property fence, the small home rises to the challenge with a bright and efficient layout. Double height ceilings and playful detailing help expand the feel of the space, while a thoughtful arrangement of windows maximizes views and light without sacrificing privacy.
The Backyard Bungalow is an example of how small-scale infill can provide deeply personal, functional, and beautiful solutions within tight urban lots. It proves that a home can be both compact and generous, defined not by square footage but by how thoughtfully the space is designed and lived in.
