SUMMARY:HXD Week: Beyond the Buzz
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Buzz: What Design Week Reveals About the Future of Interior Architecture \nEvery year\, Chicago Design Days and NeoCon introduce hundreds of new furniture products\, materials\, finishes\, and workplace design concepts. But which innovations represent meaningful shifts in interior architecture—and which are simply this year’s aesthetic trends? This session examines key observations from Chicago Design Week through three lenses: ephemeral trends\, enduring shifts\, and emerging innovations. Participants will explore how circular design principles are reshaping furniture planning and specification\, how neuroinclusive design is influencing occupant well-being\, and how manufacturers are responding to evolving expectations around sustainability\, flexibility\, material transparency\, and human-centered design. Rather than showcasing the latest products\, this course provides architects and designers with a practical framework for evaluating furniture and interior design innovations\, helping them distinguish what’s new from what’s next—and determine which ideas will have lasting impact on the health\, safety\, welfare\, and performance of the built environment. \nAIA Credit: 1.0 LU|HSW \nAbout the presenters: \n\n \n\n\n\n\nCaryn Ogier\, AIA\, RID\, LEED AP\, PMP \nKimiko Designs\nDirector of Furniture Planning \nis the Director of Furniture Planning at Kimiko Designs\, where she helps clients align furniture strategy with business goals\, user needs\, and long-term sustainability. SUMMARY:Participatory Environments with Alexis Sablone
DESCRIPTION:What can skateboarding teach us about architecture and public space? \nJoin professional skateboarder\, Olympian\, architect\, designer\, and multidisciplinary artist Alexis Sablone for a fascinating conversation on how movement shapes the way we read\, use\, and reinterpret public space. One of the most influential figures in contemporary skateboarding\, Sablone has built a career that bridges elite athletic performance\, architecture\, and public art—bringing a unique perspective to how cities can encourage creativity\, play\, and connection. \nOn Saturday\, August 1\, Sablone will discuss how the creative appropriation of urban environments can inspire more inclusive\, playful\, and dynamic cities. \nSablone holds a BA from Barnard College\, Columbia University\, and a Master of Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, where they were both the Ida C. Green Fellow and recipient of the Imre Halasz Thesis Prize. Their work bridges architecture and skateboarding through the design of hybrid playscapes and large-scale interactive sculptures\, investigating how public spaces can foster creativity\, participation\, and community. Skateboarding\, they argue\, offers designers a compelling model for understanding how shared public spaces can become beloved destinations for people of all ages\, backgrounds\, and skill levels. \nCurrently a fellow at the University of Chicago’s Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry\, where Sablone co-taught a course on the intersections of skateboarding culture\, performance\, and urban space\, Sablone brings a distinctive interdisciplinary perspective to the future of public design\, inviting audiences to rethink how cities can encourage movement\, play\, and connection. \nThis program is presented in conjunction with The Kinetics of Urban Movement\, on view at the Architecture Center Houston through September 26. \nEvent is free and open to the community. \nImage credit: Alexis Sablone Bobing the Ramp at the Guggenheim (2023). DESCRIPTION:Calling all creative thinkers! Get ready for an action-packed morning with the National Organization of Minority Architects\, Houston\, and Architecture Center of Houston\, where design and skateboarding will collide. \nWhat makes a skatepark unforgettable? Is it the bowls\, a challenging stair set\, a perfect handrail\, or a quarter pipe that keeps riders coming back? In this hands-on workshop\, students will explore how skateparks are designed to challenge\, inspire\, and bring communities together. \nStudents will work in groups to sketch\, design\, and build elements for a new community skatepark. At the end of the workshop\, students will be able to share their designs and receive feedback from architects and use mini skateboards to experience their parks. \nImmersed in the current exhibition at the Architecture Center of Houston\, Kinetics of Urban Movement\, students will be able to draw inspiration from the photographs\, 3D-printed models\, and skate park sculptures on display. SUMMARY:Kinetics of Urban Movement
DESCRIPTION:Architecture Center Houston is proud to announce their upcoming exhibition Kinetics of Urban Movement\, opening Thursday\, June 18\, 5:30-7:30pm\, curated by Rodrigo Gallardo\, Bobby King and Shane Yee. \nSkateboarding is not merely a subculture reacting against the built environment\, but a distinct way of perceiving architecture and space. \nThrough their movement\, skateboarders activate qualities already embedded in the built environment: geometry\, material behavior\, slope\, continuity\, friction\, rhythm\, and spatial sequence. Architectural elements often treated as background or residue of a design process (handrails\, parking curbs\, benches) become legible as primary moments. Empty swimming pools and deserted drainage ditches are radically reinhabited- becoming sites of engagement and gathering. \nSeen this way\, skateboarding does not merely occupy architecture differently but unlocks latent physical and spatial capacities that often exist beyond original design intention or prescribed function. \nThe exhibition traces how skateboarding reorders architectural value\, elevating overlooked forms and explaining how these discoveries gave rise to the field of skatepark design. \nRather than asking what architecture was meant to do\, skateboarding asks what architecture makes possible. \nEvent is free and open to the community. \n\nExhibition Sponsors and Community Partners \nKinetics of Urban Movement is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance \n \nCherries Wheels\nHoney Skate Club\nHouston Parks and Recreation Department\nHouston Skate Academy\nSelect\nSkate ECOSYSTEMS\nSouthside Skatepark

SUMMARY:Equity Series Workshop
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us for a group discussion on supporting health at work\, led by Carrie Hirdes\, followed by a session of desk-format meditation and sound healing by local yogi Lesley Monroy \nWomen’s health challenges are often treated as private issues\, limiting transparency\, empathy\, and meaningful support. The 2026 Equity Series brings these experiences to the forefront to highlight how individuals and leaders can reshape workplaces to better reflect the realities of women’s lives. \nThis workshop aims to help participants in grounding their lived experiences within the broader context of workplace wellbeing and equipping attendees with practices that provide relief during times of high-stress. \nPart I \nChaplain Carrie Hirdes (Memorial Hermann Hospital) will lead participants to discuss current hot topics such as burnout\, unconscious biases\, and the responsibilities businesses and leaders have to the health of their employees. In addition\, the group will discuss their individual perspectives and what responsibilities we have to ourselves to maintain personal health and goals. \nPart II \nLesley Monroy will guide participants through one hour of a combination of sound healing and meditation that focuses on personal reflection. This session will be a “desk-format” meditation that provides an avenue to acknowledge anxiety and reduce mental noise in a proactive way. \n\n\n\n\nLESLEY MONROY – Yoga Teacher \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYoga has been an integral part of my life for over two decades\, and as I transitioned from practitioner to instructor over the past six years\, I have maintained my commitment as a lifelong student of this discipline. I am grateful to hold three yoga certifications and am eagerly pursuing further education to enhance my ability to serve you better. My approach is centered on fostering deep\, trusting relationships with my students\, providing a safe space where transformation can occur. This trust enables us to explore the physical and emotional benefits of yoga together\, helping each individual feel more connected\, loved\, and grounded. \nOutside of the studio\, my life is joyfully simple\, shared with my husband and three beloved pets. I am an avid camper and an enthusiastic plant caretaker\, with aspirations to explore all of America’s national parks. \nAIA Credit: 2.0 LU \n\n\n\nOnline registration closes Wednesday\, March 4\, end of day\nA minimum of 3 days’ notice is required to receive a full refund if you need to cancel your reservation.  Registration is transferable.\nSpace is limited\n\n\n\n  \n  \nTHANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS! \nEquity Panel Discussion & Workshop \n                                                                     \nInterested in Sponsorship? \nPlease consider becoming a sponsor of the Equity Series Panel Discussion & Workshop. SUMMARY:Nuestro Ambiente
DESCRIPTION:Architecture Center Houston is proud to announce their upcoming exhibition Nuestro Ambiente: Latinos Shaping Houston presented by the Latinos in Architecture Committee opening Friday\, October 24\, 5:30-7:30pm\, and continuing through January 30\, 2026. \nAmbiente is where place becomes feeling. Here\, belonging takes shape—in the buildings and places where we bring our spirit. It’s where community gathers\, celebrates\, remembers\, and creates. This is where culture is lived\, not just observed. \nAt a time when Latino identity and communities are under increasing pressure\, Nuestro Ambiente honors the legacy of Latino contributions to Houston’s cultural and built environment—while raising the urgent question about the future of ambiente without a stable\, legally-protected\, Latino workforce. \nThe story of Nuestro Ambiente begins in Los Barrios\, Houston’s historic neighborhoods: Second Ward (Segundo Barrio)\, Magnolia Park (Little Mexico)\, Gulfton (Houston’s Ellis Island)\, and Near Northside. Through graphics\, displays\, and sound\, experience these communities’ food\, music\, and art that create Houston’s most authentic ambiente. \nThe exhibit identifies Gente de Ambiente\, community leaders\, architects\, engineers\, builders and their contributions to Houston’s cultural and built environment. Through stories of resilience and creativity\, we learn how generations of Latinos have forged lasting paths to success. \nThe exhibition is a celebration of the individual\, our communities\, spaces\, and passion that define Nuestro Ambiente. It is Nuestro Ambiente that enriches and influences Houston’s ambiente! \nEvent is free and open to the community.\n \nNuestro Ambiente is sponsored and supported by Ayala Vargas Photography\, infraTECH\, Martinez Architects\, MAREK\, Page now Stantec\, RDLR\, DBR\, Wilson and Catherine Maxey and Daniel Ortiz\, AIA.

SUMMARY:Rice Civic Forum\, In Motion: Downtown Streets\, Stories\, and People
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public.\n\n\n\nRice School of Architecture invites you to the 2025 Rice Civic Forum\, In Motion: Downtown Streets\, Stories\, and People\, convened by Professor in the Practice Amna Ansari and co-organized with AIA Houston. This year’s forum turns its focus to downtown Houston\, a district amid a remarkable transformation—from a traditional business core to a dynamic\, mixed-use urban center that reflects the city’s broader growth and diversification. \nOnce defined primarily by office towers and a 9-to-5 workforce\, downtown is now a 24/7 destination marked by residential growth\, cultural vibrancy\, public green spaces\, and a steadily diversifying economy—even amid the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past two decades\, strategic investments have reshaped the area: the expansion of METRORail\, the ecological restoration of Buffalo Bayou\, the development of Avenida Houston\, new residential and hospitality projects\, and increased investment in parks and public spaces. Together\, these changes have brought new energy\, attracting residents\, entrepreneurs\, artists\, and visitors to a redefined urban core. \nLooking ahead\, downtown Houston is positioned to lead the city into its next chapter. Key questions frame this year’s discussion: How can downtown serve as a model for a livable district and inclusive growth\, connecting with the historic wards at its edges? What role will housing\, transit\, schools\, healthcare\, public-private partnerships\, and cultural innovation play in shaping its future? As we plan for the decades to come\, downtown will remain both a testing ground and a beacon for Houston’s ambitions. \nIntroduced by Amna Ansari —  Rice School of Architecture and UltraBarrio \nCo-moderated by Michael Robinson — Principal at SWA \nSpeakers: \n\nMandi Chapa — Rice Lecturer\, Planner and Project Manager at Huitt-Zollars\nSarai Osorio — Principal Planner\nCassie Hoeprich — Director of Planning and Economic Development at Downtown Houston+\nYair Titelboim — Data Scientist – Global Digital Strategy at Hines\n\n  \nThis program is made possible through the generous support of the Betty R. and George F. Pierce Jr.\, FAIA\, Fund; the William B. Coleman Jr. Colloquium Fund for Architecture; and the Wm. W. Caudill Lecture Series Fund. \nAbout the Rice Civic Forum\nLaunched in 1973\, the Rice Civic Forum brings together architects\, designers\, scholars\, policymakers\, and community members to explore the civic dimensions of architecture and urban design. Each year\, the forum focuses on a specific neighborhood\, site\, or theme in Houston\, using the city’s unique conditions as a lens to engage broader conversations about equity\, resilience\, and the public realm. Through on-site dialogue and public programs\, the forum seeks to amplify local voices\, share diverse perspectives\, and imagine new possibilities for the city’s future.

Her parents were retired teachers and owned a bookstore. At night her father\, a history professor\, would share his favorite stories\, Julius Caesar crossing the Rubicon\, Alexander the Great conquests\, the construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Traveling the world\, through stories created a lasting impression associating those places and the unique architecture. \nNadia will share her personal journey into becoming an architect and how her family\, culture and travels have shaped her. Despite leaving Nicaragua in her teens\, her Latinidad never left her and has become an integral part of my identity as a person and as a professional. \n\n\nI form part of the generation that grew up translating English from the outside world into Spanish for our household. Today\, we are the generation that translates our community to the rest of the world through common structures and tools that form reality.  \nTony Diaz \nTony Diaz is the founder and director of Nuestra Palabra\, which a community-driven platform dedicated to amplifying the voice of Latino authors and visual artists within the community. He became the first Chicano to earn a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Houston. Diaz recently published The Tip of The Pyramid: Cultivating Community Cultural Capital (2022)\, which explores the power of cultural and community capital.  Diaz is also one of the nation’s leading forces in fighting book bans and cultural censorship. He was dubbed El Librotraficante\, or book trafficker\, a decade ago after leading a grassroots campaign transporting thousands of banned books to Arizona\, which had removed Mexican-American studies classes from public-school curriculum. \nTony will share his story\, the Nuestra Palabra movement and why it’s important to celebrate the rich diversity of Latino literature and visual art\, offering narratives that resonate with the experiences and perspectives of the community. \nLite bites provided by Avila Experiences. \nArchitecture Center Houston\n902 Commerce St\nHouston\, TX 77002 \n \n\n\n  \n\nAbout Nadia Palacios Lauterbach\, AIA\nNadia Palacios Lauterbach is a registered Architect in the state of Texas and the state of Colorado. She credits her passion for design and architecture to her upbringing in the colonial cities of Nicaragua. She attended the prestigious School of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame\, where she received a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 2003.  Nadia In 2009\, Nadia founded Nadia Palacios Architecure + Interiors + Landscape\, where she pursues challenges in design and specializes in the creation of Homes and Gardens. \nNadia draws inspiration from many sources\, particularly from her travels through Europe and Latin America\, and she believes that architecture must stand the test of time and trends\, that all spaces must be livable and human in scale\, and that everything built must be beautiful. \nNadia lives with her husband John and sons Alexander and Lorenzo in a 1920’s bungalow in Houston’s Heights neighborhood; in her free time\, she enjoys drawing\, dancing Flamenco\, and volunteering at the The Houston Area Women’s Center. She is a 2013 recipient of a “Stars on the Rise” award\, a founding member of the Texas Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art\, an inductee of The Urban Guild\, a member of the American Institute of Architects\, the Texas Society of Architects\, the American Society of Interior Designers\, the Design Leadership Network (DLN)\, and the International Network for Traditional Building\, Architecture\, and Urbanism (INTBAU).  She is a frequent guest critic at her alma mater\, and a passionate mentor for the University of Houston’s Future Women in Architecture. \nAbout Tony Diaz\nWriter and activist Tony Diaz\, El Librotraficante\, is a Cultural Accelerator. He was the first Chicano to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Houston Creative Writing Program. In 1998\, he founded Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say (NP)\, Houston’s first reading series for Latino authors. The group galvanized Houston’s Community Cultural Capital to become a movement for civil rights\, education\, and representation. When Arizona officials banned Mexican American Studies\, Diaz and four veteran members of NP organized the 2012 Librotraficante Caravan to smuggle books from the banned curriculum back into Arizona. He is the author of The Aztec Love God. His book\, The Tip of the Pyramid: Cultivating Community Cultural Capital\, is the first in his series on Community Organizing. \n\nLatinos in Architecture COLORES Sponsors\nInformation about becoming a sponsor can be found here.  \nPlatinum Sponsor\nHOK\nLESCO Architectural Lighting\nPage\nTATEMÓ \nGold Sponsors\nAllegion\ncre8 Architects\nGage Architecture\nKirksey Architecture \nSilver Sponsors\nC.A.
