DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us for a group discussion on supporting health at work\, led by Carrie Hirdes\, followed by a session of desk-format meditation and sound healing by local yogi Lesley Monroy \nWomen’s health challenges are often treated as private issues\, limiting transparency\, empathy\, and meaningful support. The 2026 Equity Series brings these experiences to the forefront to highlight how individuals and leaders can reshape workplaces to better reflect the realities of women’s lives. \nThis workshop aims to help participants in grounding their lived experiences within the broader context of workplace wellbeing and equipping attendees with practices that provide relief during times of high-stress. \nPart I \nChaplain Carrie Hirdes (Memorial Hermann Hospital) will lead participants to discuss current hot topics such as burnout\, unconscious biases\, and the responsibilities businesses and leaders have to the health of their employees. In addition\, the group will discuss their individual perspectives and what responsibilities we have to ourselves to maintain personal health and goals. \nPart II \nLesley Monroy will guide participants through one hour of a combination of sound healing and meditation that focuses on personal reflection. This session will be a “desk-format” meditation that provides an avenue to acknowledge anxiety and reduce mental noise in a proactive way. \n\n\n\n\nLESLEY MONROY – Yoga Teacher \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYoga has been an integral part of my life for over two decades\, and as I transitioned from practitioner to instructor over the past six years\, I have maintained my commitment as a lifelong student of this discipline. I am grateful to hold three yoga certifications and am eagerly pursuing further education to enhance my ability to serve you better. My approach is centered on fostering deep\, trusting relationships with my students\, providing a safe space where transformation can occur. The tour showcases the innovative bayou reclamation efforts of the City of Houston\, Harris County\, and Buffalo Bayou Partnership\, while topically discussing history and preservation\, contemporary architecture\, the bayou\, and adjacent parkland. \nMeets outside of Architecture Center Houston at 902 Commerce Street.

Mr. Espinosa has served and is currently serving on a variety of boards at the local\, state and national level. \nHe has also always worked on a variety of issues including\, race relations\, police reform and a variety of issues uplifting many communities. Mr. Espinosa is an advocate for immigrants’ rights\, students’ rights and human rights. \nCharles Foster\nCharles C. Foster is the Chairman of Foster LLP and is based in the Houston office. \nCharles has dedicated much of his career to the improvement of his community. He served as senior immigration policy advisor to President George W. Bush in the 2000 and 2004 Presidential campaigns and as an immigration policy advisor to Barack Obama in the 2008 campaign. He is the founding Chairman of the Immigration & Nationality Law Section of the State Bar of Texas and has previously served as Chairman of the Governor’s Task Force on Immigration\, the Greater Houston Partnership’s Economic Development Advisory Committee and World Trade Division\, the American Bar Association’s Coordinating Committee on Immigration Law\, and the State Bar of Texas Committee on Laws Relating to Immigration and Nationality and is past National President of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA)\, the Houston Forum and the Houston Club and Board member of Ripley / Baker. \nStan Marek\nStan Marek\, CEO of MAREK\, one of the largest interior contractors in the Southwest. Stan has been focused on workforce development\, sustainability and Comprehensive Immigration Reform.  He is the co-founder of Texans For Sensible Immigration Policy and a member of the Greater Houston Partnership’s task force\, Americans For Immigration Reform. \nEmiliano Valencia\nEmiliano Valencia is the Texas deputy director for the American Business Immigration Coalition (ABIC). ABIC is a bipartisan coalition of over 1\,800 employers and CEOs from across the country to provide a strong and unified voice seeking lasting immigration solutions. This year’s forum turns its focus to downtown Houston\, a district amid a remarkable transformation—from a traditional business core to a dynamic\, mixed-use urban center that reflects the city’s broader growth and diversification. \nOnce defined primarily by office towers and a 9-to-5 workforce\, downtown is now a 24/7 destination marked by residential growth\, cultural vibrancy\, public green spaces\, and a steadily diversifying economy—even amid the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past two decades\, strategic investments have reshaped the area: the expansion of METRORail\, the ecological restoration of Buffalo Bayou\, the development of Avenida Houston\, new residential and hospitality projects\, and increased investment in parks and public spaces. Her parents were retired teachers and owned a bookstore. At night her father\, a history professor\, would share his favorite stories\, Julius Caesar crossing the Rubicon\, Alexander the Great conquests\, the construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Traveling the world\, through stories created a lasting impression associating those places and the unique architecture. \nNadia will share her personal journey into becoming an architect and how her family\, culture and travels have shaped her. Despite leaving Nicaragua in her teens\, her Latinidad never left her and has become an integral part of my identity as a person and as a professional. \n\n\nI form part of the generation that grew up translating English from the outside world into Spanish for our household. Today\, we are the generation that translates our community to the rest of the world through common structures and tools that form reality.  \nTony Diaz \nTony Diaz is the founder and director of Nuestra Palabra\, which a community-driven platform dedicated to amplifying the voice of Latino authors and visual artists within the community. He became the first Chicano to earn a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Houston. Diaz recently published The Tip of The Pyramid: Cultivating Community Cultural Capital (2022)\, which explores the power of cultural and community capital.  Diaz is also one of the nation’s leading forces in fighting book bans and cultural censorship. She attended the prestigious School of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame\, where she received a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 2003.  Nadia In 2009\, Nadia founded Nadia Palacios Architecure + Interiors + Landscape\, where she pursues challenges in design and specializes in the creation of Homes and Gardens. \nNadia draws inspiration from many sources\, particularly from her travels through Europe and Latin America\, and she believes that architecture must stand the test of time and trends\, that all spaces must be livable and human in scale\, and that everything built must be beautiful. \nNadia lives with her husband John and sons Alexander and Lorenzo in a 1920’s bungalow in Houston’s Heights neighborhood; in her free time\, she enjoys drawing\, dancing Flamenco\, and volunteering at the The Houston Area Women’s Center. She is a 2013 recipient of a “Stars on the Rise” award\, a founding member of the Texas Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art\, an inductee of The Urban Guild\, a member of the American Institute of Architects\, the Texas Society of Architects\, the American Society of Interior Designers\, the Design Leadership Network (DLN)\, and the International Network for Traditional Building\, Architecture\, and Urbanism (INTBAU).  She is a frequent guest critic at her alma mater\, and a passionate mentor for the University of Houston’s Future Women in Architecture. \nAbout Tony Diaz\nWriter and activist Tony Diaz\, El Librotraficante\, is a Cultural Accelerator. He was the first Chicano to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Houston Creative Writing Program. In 1998\, he founded Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say (NP)\, Houston’s first reading series for Latino authors. DESCRIPTION:Do you enjoy Houston architecture and history? Eager to share that knowledge with others?\nJoin us at Architecture Center Houston for our free walking tour docent training. \nDocent training classes will be held on Saturday\, September 20\, 27\, and October 11. Each class includes public speaking training and tours. The classes will be led by our staff and experienced tour docents and are open to all. This is a great opportunity to learn about Houston architecture and history while also brushing up on your presentation skills. \nAfter completing the classes\, docents will work with an experienced docent to begin leading our walking and bicycle tours. After the initial 3-day commitment for training\, we ask docents to volunteer for 3 – 6 tours each season (October – May). \nOur tours are attended by visitors of all ages and backgrounds from all over the world and locals living throughout the greater Houston area. This is a fun way to meet a wide variety of people interested in the built environment and all things Houston.

DESCRIPTION:Accessibility and the Mega Events\nAbout this Course \nArchitecture plays a pivotal role in the success of mega events\, as it shapes the physical environments. One of the key elements in the planning of mega events is accessibility. We will be talking specifically about accessibility and the Olympic and Paralympic Games. We will also touch on the World Cup coming to Houston 2026. Accessibility when done properly allows a smooth operation and promotes the inclusion of all stakeholders responding to the principles of both sports events. The objective of this presentation is to have look at accessibility at scale of stadiums when transformed for the mega events. \n  \nAbout the speaker: \n\nIleana Rodriguez\, PLY\, Principal Owner at I Design Access\, LLC \nPrincipal at I Design Access\, LLC and international architectural designer consultant for major infrastructure projects with a focus on inclusive design. My experience comes from working for clients such as the International Paralympic Committee\, national sports organizations and a variarety of architecture firms. I have been involved as a consultant to oversee different size of projects from Olympic/Paralympic Stadiums and airports to smaller sports facilities\, hotels and temporary infrastructure. SUMMARY:Latinos in Architecture: MaS
DESCRIPTION:The Latinos in Architecture (LiA) collegiate Mentorship and Scholarship program (MaS)\, through AIA Houston and Architecture Center Houston\, intends to bridge the gap between students and professionals in the Latino architecture community. The MaS program matches college students pursuing a career path in architecture with a mentor who has an established career in the field. The program is for Latino students who are striving to influence the future of the built environment and the architecture profession. MaS will kick off on September 10\, 2025\, and conclude in May 2026. \n\n\n\n\n\nPROGRAM ELIGIBILITYfor the mentorship: \n\nStudents have the option of only particpating in the mentorship program and not pursue the scholarship. But\, students are welcome to participate in any of the events related to MaS.\nStudent pursuing a degree in architecture at the University of Houston\, Rice University\, or Prairie View A&M University.\nThe program is open to both US citizens and foreign students.\n\nfor the scholarship: \n\nStudents with at least one more academic year to apply scholarship funds directly to tuition. \nStudents with full scholarships are not eligible.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTSThe 2025-2026 program starts in September 2025 and ends in May 2026. \n\nRegularly check in with an assigned mentor (at least 4 times). These meetings can be in-person\, virtual\, or via phone call. \n​Participate in the kick-off event where they will meet the mentors. Kick-off will take place September 10 at 7pm. Register here.\nParticipate in the portfolio review organized by the LiA Committee.\nAttend three LiA\, AIAH\, TSA or HNOMA sponsored events. Not including student chapters or student-led events.\nAttend their university or college career fair.\nSubmit a PDF on a project or portfolio at the end of the Fall semester.\nSubmit a 5-minute video on a project or portfolio at the end of the Spring semester. The video should not be a recording of a class crit and should not exceed 5 minutes.\n\n\n\n\n\nAWARDS \nStudents must participate in the listed activities to be considered for the scholarship. These activities are meant to support and complement the student’s academic career. Scholarships will be awarded based on student participation in the program and their end-of-semester submission\, which will be reviewed by a jury.

She currently serves as the Associate Vice President & Chief Facilities Officer for the LSU System. \nIn her role at LSU\, she leads a team of more than 600 professionals and is responsible for over 500 buildings on the flagship campus in Baton Rouge\, as well as more than 25 million square feet of facilities across LSU’s eight campuses statewide\, including two medical campuses. \nAnzilla has successfully led major capital projects from planning through execution\, consistently delivering high-impact outcomes in complex university environments. Her leadership at Rice University included roles such as Interim Associate Vice President and Director of Project Management\, where she oversaw design\, construction\, and campus infrastructure initiatives. \nShe holds a Doctor of Education in Leadership and Learning from Vanderbilt University\, a Master of Architecture from the University of Texas at Arlington\, and a Bachelor of Architecture from Prairie View A&M University. She is a licensed architect in Louisiana and Texas. A Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and a member of the NOMA Council\, Anzilla has received numerous accolades\, including the 2022 Houston NOMA Legacy Award and the 2020 John S. Chase Jr. FAIA Award. She is also widely recognized for her commitment to mentorship and professional development\, particularly through co-founding initiatives that support and uplift emerging professionals in architecture. \n \n \nRyan Culligan\, AIA\nDesign Principal\nSOM \nRyan Culligan is a design leader in SOM’s Chicago studio and helps supervise the design and growth of SOM’s newly opened studio in Austin\, Texas. He embraces an empirical approach to design\, rooted in collaboration\, interdisciplinary applied research and careful consideration of place\, context\, history and climate.  His project work is expressive\, driven by conceptual clarity and inspired by the natural world.  He specializes in complex\, healthy\, and ecologically sensitive designs for institutional\, civic and large-scale mixed-use projects in the United States and around the world.\n\nRyan is committed to elevating the design culture and discourse among his teams and building collaborative ties between academia and his practice.  A frequent lecturer and guest studio critic at design programs around the country\, including the University of Michigan\, Auburn University\, Columbia University and Harvard University\, Ryan is a dedicated advocate and teacher for future generations of young designers.  Ryan received his Bachelor of Arts from Brown University and his Master in Architecture from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design.\n \n \nSeanna Walsh\, RA\nProject Leader\nStudio Gang \nArchitect Seanna Walsh is a Project Leader in Studio Gang’s Chicago office. Energized by the expression of building systems that respond to environmental\, social\, and site conditions to create new types of architecture\, Seanna has over 15 years of experience leading design teams for a diverse range of projects across the US\, Europe\, and Asia. At Studio Gang\, she has worked on the St. Regis Chicago; a mixed-use\, high-rise tower in Paris; and urban planning projects throughout the US. Her current projects include commercial and residential buildings that will become part of a highly sustainable\, live-work neighborhood in Silicon Valley. Seanna has served as a lecturer and guest studio critic at leading institutions\, including the Illinois Institute of Technology\, Syracuse University\, Auburn University\, and the University of Illinois Chicago. She was recognized by Bisnow’s Chicago Women Leading Real Estate as a 2024 Rising Star Honoree. \nSeanna received her Bachelor of Arts degree at Tufts University. During her undergraduate studies\, she engaged in a year of architectural formation at the Sorbonne Université in Paris. Her studies there included research about immigrant communities in the neighborhoods and banlieues of Paris. This work led into an undergraduate thesis on post-colonial architecture in Northern Africa and beyond\, a study that continues to inform and impact the way that Seanna approaches design in cultural contexts different from her own. She received her Master in Architecture from Rice University\, where her thesis explored spaces for community engagement across the widely varying urban fabric of Houston’s residential neighborhoods.

DESCRIPTION:Earth Sculpting\, a hands-on ceramics workshop by Falon Mihalic for artists and architects on how to hand-build with clay. The oldest known ceramic work is handbuilt earthenware pieces from 20\,000 years ago and handbuilt ceramic forms are among the oldest functional pottery artifacts in any continent. Falon is a licensed landscape architect (TX\, FL\, IL) with a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design and a B.A. in Natural Sciences from New College of Florida. Their work has been supported by the Kaboom Foundation\, the Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs\, the Houston Arts Alliance\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the Center for Spatial Studies at Rice University. \nFalon has presented widely\, including a recent international talk at the Center for Metropolitan Planning in Prague. SUMMARY:Urban Plants and Resilient Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Urban Plants and Resilient Gardens\, a lecture and workshop by Falon Mihalic\, PLA. Houston has a biologically diverse set of native plant life (5\,000 species in Texas) and is within the growing range of many worldwide subtropical plants. Recent weather impacts have shifted the palette of landscape plants to those that withstand flood\, drought\, freeze\, and extreme heat. Their projects investigate our perception of landscapes and ecology through site-specific works in light art\, ceramics\, and large-scale public art installations. Falon is a licensed landscape architect (TX\, FL\, IL) with a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design and a B.A. in Natural Sciences from New College of Florida. Their work has been supported by the Kaboom Foundation\, the Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs\, the Houston Arts Alliance\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the Center for Spatial Studies at Rice University. \nFalon has presented widely\, including a recent international talk at the Center for Metropolitan Planning in Prague. They currently have multiple permanent public art commissions underway across the US. \n

SUMMARY:arcHERtect: building a treehouse & sculpting a garden
DESCRIPTION:Calling all junior architects! Get ready for an imaginative day with the National Organization of Minority Architects\, Houston and Architecture Center of Houston. \nSlide into Summer with us as we immerse ourselves in designing a treehouse sprouting from a whimsical garden. Climbing vines\, trap doors\, secret pathways\, tire swings\, and every flower under the rainbow. During this workshop\, you will have the opportunity to practice being both the architect and landscape architect\, who gets to help design a treehouse and garden\, and the client\, who will work with an aspiring Architect to design your very own treehouse and garden. At the end of workshop students will be able to share their designs and receive feedback from architects. \nSurrounded by the current exhibition at the Architecture Center of Houston\, Verdant Laboratory\, students will be able take inspiration from artist and Landscape Architect\, Falon Mihalic’s sculptures\, watercolors\, and terrariums.  Falon will share her journey into architecture and the visual arts. \nAdditional information about the class: \n\nStudents will be paired into teams of two\n Each team member will take turns playing the roles of client and architect\nParticipants will interview each other to understand their partner’s vision for their treehouse and garden.\nGuided questions and prompts will be provided to help uncover details like favorite colors\, desired rooms\, special features.\nUsing the information gathered\, each Architect will sketch a design of their partners treehouse and garden.\nStudents will build and sculpt a dreamhouse and garden based off of the sketch using clay and other materials.\nTeams will present their designs to the group\, explaining features and choices made\nArchitects & designers will be on hand to guide participants\, answer questions\, and share experiences.\n\nThis interactive event is perfect for students aged 7-12 who are excited to explore the world of architecture and unleash their creativity. Through fun activities and teamwork\, participants will learn how to design while developing essential skills in problem-solving and collaboration.
