Collaborating closely with the homeowner, an esteemed Houston interior designer, the Eyles Courtyard Residence embodies a thoughtful integration with the vibrant Houston Heights neighborhood. Central to the design is a balance of privacy and openness that slowly reveals itself as you make your way through the home.
The owners sought a home that spoke to their desire for privacy rather than being a showpiece for the community. They wanted a sanctuary that respects the neighborhood while providing a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the nearby public trail. Unlike typical homes with a direct street presence, the residence welcomes visitors through a beautifully curated courtyard. This entry sequence is designed to offer a serene and inviting first touchpoint, setting the tone for the rest of the home.
The footprint is modest in size relative to the lot. The progression through the home uncovers a sequence of spaces that transition from grand, light-filled rooms to smaller, more intimate areas. The grand windows, in the kitchen and the west-facing office, allow for curated views of the sky that fill the interiors with natural light without compromising privacy. Overhangs and strategic window placements ensure a balance of light as it changes throughout the day.
The architecture complements the homeowner’s artful interior design which includes a polished mix of custom furnishings, unexpected details, and their personal art collection. Reflective of their aesthetic and everyday living, the Eyles Courtyard Residence achieves a secluded experience with an inviting presence through a collaborative design process.
