A portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to Architecture Center Houston’s Latinos in Architecture scholarship program\, established by the AIA Houston Latinos in Architecture Committee in 2019. More information about the scholarship program may be found here. \nWednesday\, September 30\, 6pm \nJoin us for an evening with Michael Gonzales\, AIA\, ProtoLab Architects\, and mixed-media artist Marisol Valencia and bites from Chef Omar Pereney. \nAbout Michael Gonzales\, AIA\nMichael Gonzales is the owner and principal of Protolab Architects\, an interdisciplinary design firm concentrating on computation\, fabrication\, and design. Michael specializes in digital fabrication innovation for civic\, commercial\, and public art projects. He has extensive experience working with the latest fabrication technologies to develop efficient strategies for optimal construction and project delivery at multiple scales and complexities. \nMichael is also an Instructional Associate Professor at the University of Houston Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design where he teaches foundation design studio and a series of electives in the design media program. He actively publishes and lectures on emerging techniques in computation and design. He received his M.S. in Advanced Architectural Design from the Columbia University GSAPP and his B.Arch from the University of Houston.\n\nMarisol Valencia is a Houston-based artist\, born and raised in Guadalajara\, Mexico\, where she studied Restoration and Conservation of Art at ECRO\, Escuela de Conservación y Restauración de Occidente. Her latest work culminates Valencia’s extended volunteering at a Houston-area shelter serving migrant women and children. She makes pieces in direct collaboration with women and volunteers at the shelter\, using materials soaked in meaning and community.  Her practice focuses on creating unique conversations through the interaction of different materials. His work encompasses cultural landscapes\, public spaces\, urban design\, infrastructure\, institutional planning\, and multidisciplinary projects in Mexico\, the United States\, China\, Oman\, and Saudi Arabia. His projects have received national and international recognition\, including awards from CEMEX\, ESCALA\, INFONAVIT\, and the Mexican Architecture Biennial. A native of Caracas\, Venezuela\, she is an internationally principal dancer and silver medalist at the New York International Ballet Competition. \nGonzalez received her early training at the Gustavo Franklin Ballet School in Caracas. She began her professional career with Ballet Nacional de Caracas before joining Tulsa Ballet\, where she was promoted to principal dancer in 2007. In 2010\, she joined Houston Ballet as a soloist and was promoted to principal dancer in 2013. \nThroughout her career\, Gonzalez has performed leading roles in works by many of the world’s most celebrated choreographers\, including George Balanchine\, John Cranko\, Nacho Duato\, Jorma Elo\, Jiří Kylián\, James Kudelka\, Wayne McGregor\, John Neumeier\, Justin Peck\, André Prokovsky\, Jerome Robbins\, Ben Stevenson\, and Stanton Welch. \nAs a guest artist\, she has performed with renowned companies around the world\, including Ballet Estable del Teatro Colón in Argentina\, The Australian Ballet\, and Leipziger Ballett in Germany. She has also appeared in international galas and festivals throughout Italy\, Mexico\, South Korea\, Malaysia\, Colombia\, Cuba\, Canada\, Germany\, and many other countries. She was invited to perform at the NHK Ballet Festival in Tokyo as part of the first American ballet company to participate in the prestigious event. \nGonzalez has been featured on the covers of Pointe Magazine\, Dance Magazine\, and A+C Houston Magazine. The Houston Press named her “Best Dancer\,” and Pointe Magazine selected one of her performances as a favorite of the year. \nBeyond the stage\, Gonzalez has appeared in television and marketing campaigns for Kimberly-Clark and Honda Civic.
