SUMMARY:Sketch the Change at POST HTX
DESCRIPTION:Join Kids+Architecture for a fun filled sketching workshop at the POST HTX \, one of Houston’s award-winning entertainment center. \nPost HTX is an adaptive reuse project that transformed the historic Barbara Jordan United States Post (USPS) Office in downtown Houston into a cultural and commercial complex. The solid fortress-like structure of the USPS office\, originally designed by Wilson\, Morris\, Crain & Anderson\, the architects of Astrodome\, had immense potential\, but its industrial character posed challenges for repurposing. OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture) and Powers Brown Architecture designed the redevelopment with sensitive modifications. The new design introduced atriums with three unique monumental staircases\, massive skylights which uses materials that once originated in a NASA lab\, and the largest rooftop park in the United States. POST HTX also includes a food hall\, restaurants\, coworking spaces and offices. \nThe workshop will begin with an architect-led tour by Jeanette Shaw\, AIA\, Powers Brown Architect\, before breaking up into small groups with architects to hone your sketching skills using watercolor pencils. \nAdditional information about the class: \n\nThis is an indoor and outdoor workshop\, please dress appropriately for the weather.\nStudents will work in small groups with architects to learn and develop their sketching techniques.\nA sketch book\, watercolor pencils\, bottle of water and a snack will be provided for registered students. Adults are welcome to participate and parents are welcome to stay to pick up when the workshop concludes.\nGeared towards ages 7-12.\nParking options at POST are $5 per hour after the first 20 minutes\, which are free.\n\nPlease plan to arrive early to allow time to park and check in. DESCRIPTION:The Houston Museum District is one of the few areas in the country with such a dense population of museums\, public art\, contemporary architecture\, and landscape design. On this 2-hour walking tour you will experience the quintessential Modernism of Mies van der Rohe\, the structuralist view point of Gunnar Birkerts\, the simplicity and craft of Isamu Noguchi\, and the first free standing American structure designed by Yoshio Taniguchi. Come explore these and other world class examples of design with ArCH tour guides and trace the chronology of significant cultural shifts from the early twentieth century through today. \nTour meets at the entrance of the Cullen Sculpture Garden\, which faces Bissonnet St. and is directly across from the MFAH. DESCRIPTION:Join architecture photographers Mariella and Luis Ayala\, AIA for this weekend workshop exploring the art and craft of capturing the built environment.  Mariella and Luis are sought out by architects across the state for their gift at showing a building in its best possible light. Their work is praised for bringing projects to life in a brilliant way\, and for capturing the emotional qualities — the story\, spirit\, and soul — of the spaces they help to document. Their work has been published in numerous magazines and books and recently bestowed with the Texas Society of Architects Honors Award for photography. The workshop will be a hands-on experience of photographing buildings and processing images digitally. This will be achieved with the use of “consumer” cameras and computers commonly owned by the non-professional photographer. A basic understanding of how to manually operate a camera is expected. Mr. Espinosa has served and is currently serving on a variety of boards at the local\, state and national level. \nHe has also always worked on a variety of issues including\, race relations\, police reform and a variety of issues uplifting many communities. Mr. Espinosa is an advocate for immigrants’ rights\, students’ rights and human rights. \nCharles Foster\nCharles C. Foster is the Chairman of Foster LLP and is based in the Houston office. \nCharles has dedicated much of his career to the improvement of his community. He served as senior immigration policy advisor to President George W. Bush in the 2000 and 2004 Presidential campaigns and as an immigration policy advisor to Barack Obama in the 2008 campaign. He is the founding Chairman of the Immigration & Nationality Law Section of the State Bar of Texas and has previously served as Chairman of the Governor’s Task Force on Immigration\, the Greater Houston Partnership’s Economic Development Advisory Committee and World Trade Division\, the American Bar Association’s Coordinating Committee on Immigration Law\, and the State Bar of Texas Committee on Laws Relating to Immigration and Nationality and is past National President of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA)\, the Houston Forum and the Houston Club and Board member of Ripley / Baker. \nStan Marek\nStan Marek\, CEO of MAREK\, one of the largest interior contractors in the Southwest. Stan has been focused on workforce development\, sustainability and Comprehensive Immigration Reform.  He is the co-founder of Texans For Sensible Immigration Policy and a member of the Greater Houston Partnership’s task force\, Americans For Immigration Reform. \nEmiliano Valencia\nEmiliano Valencia is the Texas deputy director for the American Business Immigration Coalition (ABIC). ABIC is a bipartisan coalition of over 1\,800 employers and CEOs from across the country to provide a strong and unified voice seeking lasting immigration solutions. Over the past two decades\, strategic investments have reshaped the area: the expansion of METRORail\, the ecological restoration of Buffalo Bayou\, the development of Avenida Houston\, new residential and hospitality projects\, and increased investment in parks and public spaces. Traveling the world\, through stories created a lasting impression associating those places and the unique architecture. \nNadia will share her personal journey into becoming an architect and how her family\, culture and travels have shaped her. Despite leaving Nicaragua in her teens\, her Latinidad never left her and has become an integral part of my identity as a person and as a professional. \n\n\nI form part of the generation that grew up translating English from the outside world into Spanish for our household. Today\, we are the generation that translates our community to the rest of the world through common structures and tools that form reality.  \nTony Diaz \nTony Diaz is the founder and director of Nuestra Palabra\, which a community-driven platform dedicated to amplifying the voice of Latino authors and visual artists within the community. He became the first Chicano to earn a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Houston. Diaz recently published The Tip of The Pyramid: Cultivating Community Cultural Capital (2022)\, which explores the power of cultural and community capital.  Diaz is also one of the nation’s leading forces in fighting book bans and cultural censorship. In 1998\, he founded Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say (NP)\, Houston’s first reading series for Latino authors. DESCRIPTION:Do you enjoy Houston architecture and history? Eager to share that knowledge with others?\nJoin us at Architecture Center Houston for our free walking tour docent training. \nDocent training classes will be held on Saturday\, September 20\, 27\, and October 11. Each class includes public speaking training and tours. The classes will be led by our staff and experienced tour docents and are open to all. This is a great opportunity to learn about Houston architecture and history while also brushing up on your presentation skills. \nAfter completing the classes\, docents will work with an experienced docent to begin leading our walking and bicycle tours. After the initial 3-day commitment for training\, we ask docents to volunteer for 3 – 6 tours each season (October – May). \nOur tours are attended by visitors of all ages and backgrounds from all over the world and locals living throughout the greater Houston area. This is a fun way to meet a wide variety of people interested in the built environment and all things Houston.

SUMMARY:Designed with Taste: Camaraderie
DESCRIPTION:“Shawn cooked for us before we started designing\, and it was clear from that moment on that he wanted to create a space to serve exquisitely conceived and executed dishes\, but generously and in an environment that felt unpretentious\,” Troy Schaum said. \nThe design for the chef-owned restaurant Camaraderie converts an existing\, former residential garage and wood shop into an elevated family-style restaurant. Schaum Architects strove to retain as much of the existing building as possible\, reusing almost all of the existing structure\, concrete slab\, and exterior metal wall panels. Set in The Heights\, the 75-seat restaurant is situated within a 1990s corrugated metal building\, updated with grey and blue paint. The interior is wrapped in birch wall panels and built-in banquette seating\, which warms the space\, giving the feeling of dining in a friend’s home. \nThe kitchen\, at the heart of the project\, opens like a stage onto the dining room\, where guests have an uninterrupted view of chef Shawn Gawle at work. Chef Gawle’s menu has a contemporary American cuisine rooted in French techniques. Most recently\, Gawle served as executive pastry chef at Houston’s Goodnight Hospitality and was recently named Best New Pastry Chef by Food & Wine magazine and Rising Star Chef by StarChefs. \nJoin us for a tour of Camaraderie and a sampling of fare with Troy Schaum of Schaum Architects and Chef Shawn Gawle of Camaraderie. \nCamaraderie received an AIA 2025 Design Award for Interior Architecture. \nDesigned with Taste\, an event series from Architecture Center Houston explores Houston’s newest restaurants to examine how design affects the dining experience. DESCRIPTION:Accessibility and the Mega Events\nAbout this Course \nArchitecture plays a pivotal role in the success of mega events\, as it shapes the physical environments. One of the key elements in the planning of mega events is accessibility. We will be talking specifically about accessibility and the Olympic and Paralympic Games. We will also touch on the World Cup coming to Houston 2026. Accessibility when done properly allows a smooth operation and promotes the inclusion of all stakeholders responding to the principles of both sports events. The objective of this presentation is to have look at accessibility at scale of stadiums when transformed for the mega events. \n  \nAbout the speaker: \n\nIleana Rodriguez\, PLY\, Principal Owner at I Design Access\, LLC \nPrincipal at I Design Access\, LLC and international architectural designer consultant for major infrastructure projects with a focus on inclusive design. My experience comes from working for clients such as the International Paralympic Committee\, national sports organizations and a variarety of architecture firms. I have been involved as a consultant to oversee different size of projects from Olympic/Paralympic Stadiums and airports to smaller sports facilities\, hotels and temporary infrastructure.
