DESCRIPTION:Houston’s Third Ward is a culturally rich\, historically African-American neighborhood\, that includes Texas Southern University (HBCU)\, The University of Houston (Tier 1)\, Emancipation Park\, and numerous other cultural gems. One of those is the Columbia Tap Trail\, completed in 2009\, which sits atop the abandoned Columbia Tap railroad route – originally built by enslaved people to transport cotton and sugar from Plantation to Port.  The trail connects adjacent neighborhoods and serves as a vital link in the growing Houston trail system. \nJoin us to bike along the Columbia Tap Trail\, to learn more about the trail history and identity\, safety prioritizations\, culture of the neighborhoods adjacent to the trail\, and local artists. \nMeeting Location and Times\nFor those individuals renting bikes\, we will meet at Eado Bike Company at 912 Saint Charles St.\, Houston TX 77003 at 10am.\nFor those bringing their personal bikes\, please join us at Eado. DESCRIPTION:Of the over 116\,000 registered architects in the United States only 5.4 percent identify as Latino or Hispanic according to NCARB.  Latinos represent 18.9 percent of the total U.S. population\, the nation’s second largest ethnic group.  And in Houston\, Latinos represent 44.5 percent of the population. \nJoin the Latinos in Architecture (LiA) Committee for an intimate conversation engaging leadership from firms of different sizes on their efforts to increase that percentage\, empower their Latino employees\, develop and support a pipeline of future Latino architects from high schools and colleges\, and giving a voice to Latinos. \nThis conversation will focus on managing principals of mid and large sized firms Whitney Fuessel\, AIA (HKS); Raymond Romero\, Assoc. AIA (Inventure); Roger Soto\, AIA (HOK); Saul Valentin\, AIA (Collaborate). DESCRIPTION:Co-organized with the Rice School of Architecture and in conjunction with the upcoming exhibition Unequal Inequities.\nDeadline to register is Friday\, November 1. Space is limited. \nHouston Reimagined: Dismantling Inequity through the Power of Design is a visionary design charrette that invites students to reimagine Houston’s neighborhoods as if key discriminatory policies had never existed. This event is a collaborative effort to explore how transportation\, housing\, and environmental justice policies have shaped some of Houston’s most iconic communities\, including Third Ward\, Second Ward\, and Kashmere Gardens. \nParticipating students will be challenged to envision alternative urban futures where equity\, inclusivity\, and sustainability are at the forefront. Through guided design prompts\, attendees will focus on creating major urban features and micro-design elements that reflect a more just and unified city. The charrette aims to inspire innovative solutions that address historical injustices and propose new ways to build a more connected and equitable Houston for all its residents. \nJoin us in this dynamic and interactive workshop to contribute your ideas and creativity toward reshaping the future of Houston’s urban landscape. \nDesign Charrette Guidelines: \n\nParticipation is not limited to pre-formed groups. Individuals wishing to participate will be grouped with attending participants.\nPre-formed teams can be made up 3-6 individuals.\nSketch pads\, markers\, pens and pencils\, scales and jump drives will be provided to teams for their use.\nParticipants are encouraged to bring laptops\, chargers\, a camera-capable digital device\, jump drive or preferred media to develop designs.\nTeams should use their allocated time efficiently. On charrette day\, teams will have from 10am to 5pm to brainstorm and package their final designs to be uploaded to Submittable and reviewed by a panel of judges.\nCharrette background information will be sent on Thursday\, November 7.\nBreakfast and lunch will be provided.\n\nDesigns are to be presented digitally through Submittalbe. A reception announcing the judge’s results and commentary will be held on a date to be announced at Architecture Center Houston. Design teams should plan to attend. \nAll designs will be included in the upcoming exhibition Unequal Inequities on view October 2\, 2024 -January 17\, 2025

DESCRIPTION:The Houston Museum District is one of the few areas in the country with such a dense population of museums\, public art\, contemporary architecture\, and landscape design. On this 2-hour walking tour you will experience the quintessential Modernism of Mies van der Rohe\, the structuralist view point of Gunnar Birkerts\, the simplicity and craft of Isamu Noguchi\, and the first free standing American structure designed by Yoshio Taniguchi. Come explore these and other world class examples of design with ArCH tour guides and trace the chronology of significant cultural shifts from the early twentieth century through today. \nTour meets at the entrance of the Cullen Sculpture Garden\, which faces Bissonnet St. and is directly across from the MFAH.
