SUMMARY:UH Art & Architecture Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:An exploration of art\, architecture and campus design on the University of Houston’s main campus. Works by Frank Stella\, Jim Love\, William King and The Art Guys are found within the context of a campus and buildings designed by notable architects such as Philip Johnson\, Alfred C. Finn\, Gensler\, Lake|Flato\, BNIM and Cesar Pelli. \nThe tour will meet in the courtyard in front of the Moores School of Music by the Winged Woman sculpture. Parking available in adjacent campus visitor’s lot. DESCRIPTION:Montrose is one of the most diverse and interesting neighborhoods in Houston with some of the city’s best architecture including spectacular mansions\, charming bungalows\, the campus of the University of St. Thomas\, Rothko Chapel\, and the Menil Collection. ArCH tour guides will present an overview of the architectural and social history of the area\, including Fondren Mansion (now La Colombe d’Or)\, Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral\, Chapel of St. Basil\, Rothko Chapel\, Cy Twombly Gallery\, and the Menil Collection. On this 2-hour walking tour\, you will get a flavor of this special district and be encouraged to widen your path after the tour is over. \nMeet outside the Menil Collection Bookstore\, 1520 Sul Ross\, 77006. SUMMARY:The 17th Annual Gingerbread Build-Off
DESCRIPTION:Architecture Center Houston will host the 17th Annual Gingerbread Build-Off at Levy Park on Saturday\, December 12\, 2026. Competing teams will create 100% edible\, architectural masterpieces using gingerbread\, candy\, and all sorts of other sweet treats (of which leftovers will be composted)! More than 4\,000 spectators are expected to attend and cheer on the teams\, play in the kids’ construction zone\, and lawn games! All of that entertainment is free and open to the public! \nWho can participate?\nTeam registration is open to local architects\, designers\, engineers\, high school and college students\, and holiday enthusiasts of all kinds\, seeking fame and fortune with their sugary structures. \nCompetition Categories\nThe 2026 Competition Category – Once Upon A Gingerbread\nEvery great story starts with “once upon a time”… and ends with a little icing! Bring your favorite tales\, characters\, and imaginary worlds to life through gingerbread\, candy\, and creativity. DESCRIPTION:Honoring David Bucek\, FAIA\,\nWe are proud to announce that David Bucek\, FAIA will be honored with the AIA Houston Award for Career Distinction at our Holiday Party on December 15 at the Museum of Fine Arts. We are currently raising funds to purchase in David’s honor an architect designed object for the museum’s permanent design collection. \nGifts can be made online by completing and submitting a donation form by following this LINK to MFAH. \nPlease make your donation on or before November 15 so that we will have time to purchase the item for display at the party. \nThe American Institute of Architects\, Houston Design Collection\nMuseum purchase funded by friends of David Bucek\, in his honor \nAbout the Honoree: \nDavid Bucek\, FAIA\, LEED AP BD+C\, is a principal with Stern and Bucek Architects.  David specializes in new construction\, adaptive reuse\, renovation\, and historic preservation. David holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Houston\, Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture 1990 and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design 1992.  He has taught architectural design at the University of Houston and the University of Texas at Austin.  David began working for William Stern & Associates in 1992. In 1999\, David partnered with Bill Stern to form Stern and Bucek Architects. By 2009\, Stern and Bucek Architects was honored by AIA Houston as Firm of the Year. David was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows for Design/Historic Preservation in 2011. \nDavid is a preservation advocate whose body of work demonstrates exemplary support of historic architectural research and restoration in Texas communities. His work has garnered awards from the\, Advisory Council for Historic Preservation (ACHP)\, National Trust for Historic Preservation\, DOCOMOMO US\, Institute of Classical Architecture & Art\, Texas Society of Architects\, Texas Historical Commission\, Preservation Texas\, Preservation Houston\, AIA Houston and PaperCity. \nDavid is the 2024 recipient of Preservation Houston’s President’s Award\, the 2020 recipient for the Texas Society of Architects Community Service Award in Honor of James D. Pfluger FAIA\, 2006 Wharton’s Person of the Year Award bestowed by the Wharton Journal Spectator and the 2001 Texas Historical Commission’s Award of Excellence in Historic Architecture Research. \nProfessional noteworthy projects are the renovation of the Houston’s Contemporary Arts Museum\, preservation of the Frame/Harper House (Harwood Taylor)\, the Menil House\, (Phillip Johnson)\, Christ Church Cathedral\, Baker Commons at Rice University\, Eldorado Ballroom\, Sengelmann Hall in Schulenburg\, Texas\, Bellville Turnverein in Bellville\, Texas and the NASA Johnson Space Center “Apollo” Mission Operations Control Center. \nVolunteerism matches his professional career in terms of timeframe (34 years). David is the Chair of the City of Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission (HAHC). He currently serves as President and Chair of the Buildings Committee at the Heritage Society at Sam Houston Park/Houston\, and serves on the board of Houston Mod\, Wharton County Heritage Partnership\, Wharton County Courthouse Restoration/Preservation and was recently appointed to the State Board of Review\, as an Architect member\, by the Texas Historical Commission. He formerly served on the boards of Preservation Texas\, Texas Architecture Foundation\, AIA Houston\, where he served as 2016 AIA Houston President and the Architecture Center Houston Foundation\, where he served as 2023 ArCH President.

DESCRIPTION:The Texas Medical Center is the largest medical center in the world. Equivalent to the 8th largest business district in the United States\, TMC has over 50 million square feet of patient care\, education\, and research space. 160\,000+ individuals visit the Texas Medical Center each day\, with more than 6 million patients treated annually. The 1000+ acres is approximately the size of Chicago inside the “Loop\,” with over 160 buildings on the main campus alone. Join our ArCH docents on this introductory architectural tour of Houston’s own modern marvel of medicine. Sites on our tour will include Baylor College of Medicine\, the new Texas Children’s Hospital Maternity Center\, MD Anderson Cancer Center\, and Methodist Research Center. \nMeet inside the Herman Professional Building\,  6400 Fannin.
