DESCRIPTION:A treasure trove of great architecture\, the timeless campus features designs by Cram\, Goodhue\, & Ferguson; John Staub; William Ward Watkin; Michael Graves; Kieran Timberlake; Ricardo Bofill; Cesar Pelli; Lake/Flato Architects; and many other local and internationally renowned architects. Also on the tour are large scale art works by James Turrell and Michael Heizer. From Lovett Hall to Brochstein Pavilion\, this tour will look at some of the more unique\, hidden\, important and historical features of Rice University’s Campus. In addition to the architecture we will explore the context surrounding each building\, the quads\, courts and axes\, how these elements work together to shape collegiate space. \nTour meets on the front lawn of Lovett Hall\, building 1 on the Rice University map\, 6100 Main. DESCRIPTION:The Texas Medical Center is the largest medical center in the world. Equivalent to the 8th largest business district in the United States\, TMC has over 50 million square feet of patient care\, education\, and research space. 160\,000+ individuals visit the Texas Medical Center each day with more than 6 million patients treated annually. The 1000+ acres is approximately the size of Chicago inside the “Loop” with over 160 buildings on the main campus alone. Join our ArCH docents on this introductory architectural tour of Houston’s own modern marvel of medicine. DESCRIPTION:The 2026 competition program will be announced at the workshop. \nAn annual ideas competition with an emphasis on creative problem solving and graphic presentation\, the Michael G. Meyers Design & Scholarship Competition is sponsored by the Architecture Center Houston Foundation\, the Houston Chapter of AIA and local architectural firms and affiliates. \nThe Competition Committee hosts a workshop to help the students learn basic architectural design skills\, understand the competition requirements and meet the client. While students attend the workshop\, teachers and parents are welcome to attend an informational session about the program. \nProjects are due May 1\, 2026 and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony. \nAll Houston area high school students are eligible to participate regardless of class affiliation or age. Students are requested to enter only once per year as either a member of a team or as an individual. SUMMARY:Get to Know an Architect: Patrick Lopez
DESCRIPTION:Patrick Lopez (1937-2018) studied architecture at the University of Texas and the University of Houston and opened his own design firm in 1964. Yet it was his childhood fascination with images in comic books and cartoons that inspired his career as an illustrator. His talents were recognized and sought after by major firms across the country. Lopez spent years working with some of the best architects\, including Helmut Jahn\, Philip Johnson\, John Burgee\, S. I. Morris\, and Eugene Aubry. \nIn collaboration with the Houston History Research Center (HHRC)\, join us on Saturday\, January 31\, at the Julian Ideson Library for a conversation and a look at the library’s collection of Lopez’s architectural renderings with HHRC Architecture Archivist Ginger Berni. \nThe event is free and open to the community.
