SUMMARY:Engineering the Eighth Wonder of the World
DESCRIPTION:Join industry leaders Thomas G. Barrow Jr.\, PE (I. A. Naman + Associates\, Inc.)\, Chip Hurley\, PE (HF Structural Engineers)\, and Bill Merrill for a first-hand look into the challenges and solutions to engineering the Eighth Wonder of the World. The discussion will cover the design of the lamella roof structure and the challenges of designing and constructing the longest column-free span to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction\, hurricane-force winds\, and even sonic booms. Discussions related to the challenges with the comfort systems will include cooling 65\,000 fans\, preventing indoor weather events such as fog and rain\, maintaining adequate growing conditions for natural grass and mitigating the effects of tobacco smoke. \nModerated by David Bucek\, FAIA. \nThis program is in conjunction with Big Dome\, Bigger Dreams\, on view at the Architecture Center Houston through January 22\, 2026 \nExhibition Sponsors \nBig Dome and Bigger Dreams is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance. Fabrication and installation provided by Innovative Environments \n       \nWSP\nHoar Construction\nI. A. Naman + Associates\, Inc.\nDLR Group \n\nAbout the speakers \nThomas G Barrow Jr.\, PE\nPresident of I. A. Naman+Associates\, Inc.\, a native Houstonian\, former card-carrying member of the Astros Buddies\, Texas A&M University mechanical engineering graduate\, 1985. Mechanical engineer and Project Manager on many prominent Houston-area buildings\, including over 10 Compaq Computer Corporation buildings\, 1500 Louisiana\, 3737 Buffalo Speedway\, Anadarko Woodloch Tower\, the Lee P. Brown Administration Building\, CityWestPlace buildings 1 and 4\, and many other projects outside of the Houston area. \nI. A. Naman+Associates\, Inc. was founded in 1947 by Houston native and 1938 Rice University graduate I. A. Naman. In ~1960\, it was engaged to design the air-conditioning and air distribution systems for the Astrodome. Many of the concepts for air distribution and automatic temperature control that IAN+A originated with the Astrodome\, were used in subsequent domed stadiums. IAN+A went on to design the mechanical\, electrical and plumbing systems for many high-rise office buildings and others throughout Houston\, Texas\, and the United States\, including Chase Tower\, Wells Fargo Plaza\, Williams Tower\, and Astroworld.

SUMMARY:Continuing Education Day
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to attend a day of Continuing Education (CE) Series sponsored by the Committee on the Environment (COTE).\n9:45am Check-in and Coffee  \n10:15-11:30am\nIntroduction to Passive House – 1.0 AIA HSW\nPresented by David Komet\, CPHC w/Urban Earth Consulting \nPassive House goals and methodology change how architects and builders think and work\, making the architectural design a driver of climate\, health\, and social solutions. This one-hour course dives into the basic principles\, history\, and the new frontiers of Passive House design as it continues to challenge and change industry expectations. \n11:30-12:45pm\nA Sustainable Path Forward / Embodied Carbon and EPDs – 1.0 AIA HSW\nPresented by Chris A. King\, CSI\, CDT w/ROCKWOOL \nAlong with energy conservation measures\, sustainability trends are continuously becoming more robust with high focus on carbon emissions\, product transparency and resiliency. Importantly\, the embodied carbon impacts of building materials are becoming one of the primary measurements of a product’s sustainability. The use of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) is increasing where understanding the inputs and outputs of the lifecycle assessment are critical. This course will provide insight into these topics using stone wool insulation as an example\, and relate them to overall durability\, energy efficiency\, and occupant health and comfort. These topics will be explored within the infrastructure of green building certification metrics and schemes such as LEED and local sustainability initiatives will be integrated. Best practices and user-friendly tools and resources to assist with sourcing sustainable products will be highlighted. \n12:45-1:15pm\nBreak for Lunch  \n1:15-2:30pm\nFortWhyte Alive Buffalo Crossing: Passive House\, Zero Carbon\, and Mass Timber Design – 1.25 AIA HSW\nPresented by Jonas Risen\, AIA w/Stantec \nUsing FortWhyte Alive’s Buffalo Crossing visitor centre as a case study\, this program explores how architecture\, sustainability\, and building performance came together to shape a highly responsive design. The presentation follows the project from its unique site and climate considerations through decisions about building form\, orientation\, mass timber\, envelope design\, daylight and solar control\, and mechanical systems. Particular attention is given to how these strategies support occupant comfort\, resilience\, energy efficiency\, and long-term building performance. The session will also share lessons learned from pursuing Passive House and Zero Carbon goals while balancing design intent\, constructability\, and the experience of the people who use the building. \n  \n  \nTotal AIA Learning Units: 3.25 AIA HSW \n\nIndividual classes are not available for the event.\nPre-registered pricing includes lunch only.\nParking is not included.\nA minimum of 3 business days’ notice is required to receive a full refund if you need to cancel your reservation.\n\n  \nMission of the COTE Committee:  \nThe Committee on the Environment (COTE) works to advance\, disseminate\, and advocate—to the profession\, the building industry\, the academy\, and the public—design practices that integrate built and natural systems and enhance both the design quality and environmental performance of the built environment. \nThe committee reflects the profession’s commitment to providing healthy and safe environments for people and is dedicated to preserving the earth’s capability of sustaining a shared high quality of life. The committee’s mission is to lead and coordinate the profession’s involvement in environmental and energy-related issues and to promote the role of the architect as a leader in preserving and protecting the planet and its living systems. \n\n  \n\nOnline registration will close Sunday\, November 29 \nOnsite registration is available (lunch is NOT included)
