Equivalent to the 8th largest business district in the United States\, TMC has over 50 million square feet of patient care\, education\, and research space. 160\,000+ individuals visit the Texas Medical Center each day with more than 6 million patients treated annually. The 1000+ acres is approximately the size of Chicago inside the “Loop” with over 160 buildings on the main campus alone. Join our ArCH docents on this introductory architectural tour of Houston’s own modern marvel of medicine. SUMMARY:Get to Know an Architect: Patrick Lopez
DESCRIPTION:Patrick Lopez (1937-2018) studied architecture at the University of Texas and the University of Houston and opened his own design firm in 1964. Yet it was his childhood fascination with images in comic books and cartoons that inspired his career as an illustrator. His talents were recognized and sought after by major firms across the country. Lopez spent years working with some of the best architects\, including Helmut Jahn\, Philip Johnson\, John Burgee\, S. I. Morris\, and Eugene Aubry. \nIn collaboration with the Houston History Research Center (HHRC)\, join us on Saturday\, January 31\, at the Julian Ideson Library for a conversation and a look at the library’s collection of Lopez’s architectural renderings with HHRC Architecture Archivist Ginger Berni. \nThe event is free and open to the community. DESCRIPTION:Join AIA Houston for a Happy Hour Meet & Greet with artist\, architect\, and educator Gail Peter Borden\, FAIA\, celebrating his gallery exhibition\, Shallow Spaces\, on Tuesday\, February 3\, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at Hooks-Epstein Galleries. \nPresented in partnership with Hooks-Epstein Galleries\, Shallow Spaces examines how art is experienced through material\, space\, perception\, and presence. Through pared-down geometry\, prismatic form\, and deliberate color relationships\, Borden’s work explores how parts cohere into a whole and how form is perceived across place and time. Reduction operates as a strategy for clarity\, inviting close attention to proportion\, subtle movement\, and the shifting effects of light reflected across each surface. The works engage the viewer through quiet interaction\, creating a dialogue between the visual\, spatial\, and experiential. \nGuests are invited to meet Gail Peter Borden\, learn more about his multidisciplinary practice\, and experience the exhibition in conversation with fellow architects\, designers\, and members of Houston’s creative community. \nLight bites and drinks will be provided. \nGail Peter Borden\, FAIA\, is Director of Graduate Programs and a tenured Professor at the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design at the University of Houston and principal of Borden Partnership. His work has received numerous national honors\, including the Architectural League Prize\, the AIA Young Architect Award\, BD+C’s 40 Under 40\, and multiple AIA\, ASA\, and RADA awards. He has also been awarded artist-in-residence fellowships from the Chinati Foundation\, Atlantic Center for the Arts\, the Borchard Fellowship\, and the MacDowell Colony\, and is the author of several influential books on materiality. \nThis event is open to the public and offers a unique opportunity to engage directly with the ideas and work behind Shallow Spaces in an informal\, social setting.

On this 2-hour walking tour you will experience the quintessential Modernism of Mies van der Rohe\, the structuralist view point of Gunnar Birkerts\, the simplicity and craft of Isamu Noguchi\, and the first free standing American structure designed by Yoshio Taniguchi. Come explore these and other world class examples of design with ArCH tour guides and trace the chronology of significant cultural shifts from the early twentieth century through today. \nTour meets at the entrance of the Cullen Sculpture Garden\, which faces Bissonnet St. and is directly across from the MFAH. DESCRIPTION:Join members of the Michael G. Meyers Competition Committee for a walking tour of the 2026 project site and the surrounding neighborhood. This is a great opportunity for students to see the selected site and learn about the neighborhood’s history and architecture. \nThe tour will start at Guadalupe Plaza Park\, continue through East End\, and end at the project site along Buffalo Bayou. We will also have representatives from the East End District to welcome our group and provide information about the community. One of these representatives will serve as a judge for our competition. \nAn annual ideas competition with an emphasis on creative problem solving and graphic presentation\, the Michael G. Meyers Design & Scholarship Competition is sponsored by the Architecture Center Houston Foundation\, the Houston Chapter of AIA and local architectural firms and affiliates. The Competition Committee hosts a series of events to help the students learn basic architectural design skills and understand the competition requirements. Projects are due in April and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at the Architecture Center Houston. All Houston area high school students are eligible to participate regardless of class affiliation or age. Students are requested to enter only once per year as either a member of a team or as an individual. SUMMARY:Echoes of an Aqueduct
DESCRIPTION:Within the Mexico–Texas Pedagogical Axis framework\, the UH College of Architecture and Design partnered with GOMA\, an architecture office in Querétaro\, Mexico\, to develop a fifth-year Professional Design Studio course. The studio focused on rethinking and repurposing an obsolete aqueduct in Querétaro that currently divides the Hércules neighborhood as a physical barrier. The proposed design transforms the aqueduct into a pedestrian-friendly public space\, integrating small architectural interventions to enhance connectivity and community engagement. The project’s tangible outcomes include comprehensive exhibition graphics and a 25-foot physical urban model of the aqueduct and its neighborhood. These materials will support at least two exhibitions and forums—one in Houston and one in Querétaro—bringing together Hércules residents\, urban theorists\, and architecture professionals to foster dialogue and collaborative strategies for neighborhood revitalization. \nEchoes of an Aqueduct | Reviving History\, Reconnecting Hércules addresses the critical challenge of obsolete infrastructures and their impact on communities and territories. It supports UH CoAD’s educational mission by raising awareness among students\, faculty\, and urban architecture professionals while demonstrating the value of cross-cultural collaboration through the Mexico–Texas pedagogical axis. By combining rigorous scholarship with public engagement\, the project fosters interdisciplinary learning\, encouraging community participation\, ensuring inclusivity\, and modeling sustainable urban transformation. Exhibition materials—large-scale models and visually compelling graphics—are carefully designed for accessibility\, enabling dialogue among academics\, professionals\, and the Hércules community. \n\nAbout the Organizer\nJosé Roldán is a Spanish architect who graduated at the Seville University School of Architecture. In 2014\, he graduated with Distinction at the Design Research Laboratory with an M.Arch at the Architectural Association School of Architecture of London. \nJosé started his professional career with Norman Foster at his London office\, developing several international projects such as the New Mexico International Airport. After two years\, he joined Richard Rogers’s office in London where he stayed until 2022\, specializing in big scale projects like the new Terminal 3 at Taiwan Airport and several skyscraper projects in Asia and America. In 2022 he moved to Houston where he works as Senior Designer at Page and as an Instructional Assistant Professor at the Hines College.

SUMMARY:The History and Future of the LULAC Council 60 Clubhouse
DESCRIPTION:For nearly a century\, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) has championed Latino civil rights\, civic inclusion\, educational\, and economic opportunity. \nThe modest\, two-story stucco building that became LULAC Council 60’s home was originally built in 1907 and purchased in 1955 for its members. Council 60 was at the center of Mexican American political organizing in Houston during the 1950s and ‘60s\, a formative time in civil rights history. Its Clubhouse served as the de facto national headquarters of LULAC throughout most of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement. (The organization’s national office in Washington\, D.C.\, was not established until 1996.) During those two decades of influential civil rights work\, Council 60 advanced voting rights\, desegregated schools\, created job training programs\, and reshaped American democracy. \nThe Historic Council 60 Clubhouse is the last surviving LULAC Clubhouse from the civil rights era in the United States. In 2018\, the Clubhouse was designated a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The 2026 Equity Series brings these experiences to the forefront to highlight how individuals and leaders can reshape workplaces to better reflect the realities of women’s lives. \nThis workshop aims to help participants in grounding their lived experiences within the broader context of workplace wellbeing and equipping attendees with practices that provide relief during times of high-stress. \nPart I \nChaplain Carrie Hirdes (Memorial Hermann Hospital) will lead participants to discuss current hot topics such as burnout\, unconscious biases\, and the responsibilities businesses and leaders have to the health of their employees. In addition\, the group will discuss their individual perspectives and what responsibilities we have to ourselves to maintain personal health and goals. \nPart II \nLesley Monroy will guide participants through one hour of a combination of sound healing and meditation that focuses on personal reflection. SUMMARY:MFAH Antiques Dealers Association Annual Lecture
DESCRIPTION:In 2025\, the MFAH acquired by gift two rare\, rediscovered pieces of Greene & Greene furniture from the architects’ famed 1907 Blacker House\, a masterwork of Arts & Crafts architecture in Pasadena\, California. Dispersed in a yard sale with other contents from the house in 1947\, the music cabinet and chair were bought by a Texas family and remained in that collection until they were donated to the Museum. The cabinet is a unique piece\, made specifically for the living room of the historic house. \nThis lecture positions the Blacker House as the culmination of the Greenes’ Arts & Crafts architecture—with the Museum’s recent acquisitions from the house providing a lens on the brothers’ design philosophy. In their “ultimate bungalows” in Pasadena\, the architects created a distinctly Californian architecture that fused British Arts & Crafts ideals\, American vernacular traditions\, and Asian aesthetic principles. Close analysis reveals the Blacker House as the epitome of a fully realized Gesamtkunstwerk\, where architecture\, furnishings\, and landscape were conceived as an integrated whole. \nAbout the Speaker\nWendy Kaplan has been at LACMA since 2001 as the department head and curator of decorative arts and design. She has held curatorial positions at the Wolfsonian-Florida International University in Miami\, Glasgow Museums in Scotland\, and the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston. A leading expert on late 19th- and 20th-century design\, she has authored\, co-authored\, or edited books including Found in Translation: Design in California and Mexico\, 1915–1985 and California Design\, 1930–1965: “Living in a Modern Way.” Kaplan is currently organizing the exhibition Home of the Future\, 1925–1985: Designing Domestic Utopias for LACMA.

DESCRIPTION:The Houston Museum District is one of the few areas in the country with such a dense population of museums\, public art\, contemporary architecture\, and landscape design. On this 2-hour walking tour you will experience the quintessential Modernism of Mies van der Rohe\, the structuralist view point of Gunnar Birkerts\, the simplicity and craft of Isamu Noguchi\, and the first free standing American structure designed by Yoshio Taniguchi. Come explore these and other world class examples of design with ArCH tour guides and trace the chronology of significant cultural shifts from the early twentieth century through today. \nTour meets at the entrance of the Cullen Sculpture Garden\, which faces Bissonnet St. and is directly across from the MFAH.
