SUMMARY:MFAH Antiques Dealers Association Annual Lecture
DESCRIPTION:In 2025\, the MFAH acquired by gift two rare\, rediscovered pieces of Greene & Greene furniture from the architects’ famed 1907 Blacker House\, a masterwork of Arts & Crafts architecture in Pasadena\, California. Dispersed in a yard sale with other contents from the house in 1947\, the music cabinet and chair were bought by a Texas family and remained in that collection until they were donated to the Museum. The cabinet is a unique piece\, made specifically for the living room of the historic house. \nThis lecture positions the Blacker House as the culmination of the Greenes’ Arts & Crafts architecture—with the Museum’s recent acquisitions from the house providing a lens on the brothers’ design philosophy. In their “ultimate bungalows” in Pasadena\, the architects created a distinctly Californian architecture that fused British Arts & Crafts ideals\, American vernacular traditions\, and Asian aesthetic principles. Close analysis reveals the Blacker House as the epitome of a fully realized Gesamtkunstwerk\, where architecture\, furnishings\, and landscape were conceived as an integrated whole. \nAbout the Speaker\nWendy Kaplan has been at LACMA since 2001 as the department head and curator of decorative arts and design. She has held curatorial positions at the Wolfsonian-Florida International University in Miami\, Glasgow Museums in Scotland\, and the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston. A leading expert on late 19th- and 20th-century design\, she has authored\, co-authored\, or edited books including Found in Translation: Design in California and Mexico\, 1915–1985 and California Design\, 1930–1965: “Living in a Modern Way.” Kaplan is currently organizing the exhibition Home of the Future\, 1925–1985: Designing Domestic Utopias for LACMA.

DESCRIPTION:The Houston Museum District is one of the few areas in the country with such a dense population of museums\, public art\, contemporary architecture\, and landscape design. On this 2-hour walking tour you will experience the quintessential Modernism of Mies van der Rohe\, the structuralist view point of Gunnar Birkerts\, the simplicity and craft of Isamu Noguchi\, and the first free standing American structure designed by Yoshio Taniguchi. Come explore these and other world class examples of design with ArCH tour guides and trace the chronology of significant cultural shifts from the early twentieth century through today. \nTour meets at the entrance of the Cullen Sculpture Garden\, which faces Bissonnet St. and is directly across from the MFAH. DESCRIPTION:The purpose of the interim review is to provide students the opportunity to present their project in process to volunteer architects\, to receive constructive feedback\, troubleshoot design problems\, and answer questions. Students will meet with each architect for 10-15 minutes. \nThis event will also include a tour of CannonDesign. \nParking: CannonDesign has a parking garage that charges $4-$6. \nDeadline to register is Friday\, March 27. \nAn annual ideas competition with an emphasis on creative problem-solving and graphic presentation\, the Michael G. Meyers Design & Scholarship Competition is sponsored by the Architecture Center Houston Foundation\, the Houston Chapter of AIA\, and local architectural firms and affiliates. The Competition Committee hosts a series of events to help the students learn basic architectural design skills and understand the competition requirements. Projects are due in April\, and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at the Architecture Center Houston. The series highlights how Latino professionals are finding their voice\, contributing to the profession\, advocating for representation\, and uplifting the next generation\, from high school students to emerging architects. While reflecting on how Houston’s Latino population influences design and architectural work across the industry. \nFor our first 2026 TertuLiA\, we are focusing on residential\, design–build\, high-end\, and small commercial practices including Paul Benavente (Stella Maris Architecture)\, Luisa Aurrecoechea (LEAM Design + Build)\, Franco Albarran\, AIA (Albarran Architects) and Paola Rubio (Paola Rubio Design Studio). Starting the TertuLiAs series this year with residential design professionals offers meaningful benefits for us as Latinos in Architecture. Residential work remains one of the most accessible and community-connected areas of practice\, especially for early- and mid-career Latino designers. By learning from colleagues who specialize in residential\, design–build\, high end projects and small commercial\, we gain insight into project delivery methods\, client engagement\, and business development models that often lead to entrepreneurial opportunities\, pathways where Latinos have historically thrived. \nOf the over 121\,000 registered architects in the United States\, only 6 percent identify as Latino or Hispanic\, according to NCARB.  Latinos represent 19.1 percent of the total U.S. population\, the nation’s second largest ethnic group.  In Houston\, Latinos comprise 44.1 percent of the population. \nJoin us for this first 2026 session to hear about their experience\, their journey\, challenges\, successes\, and how they’ve shaped their practice. \nThis session will take place at one of LEAM Design + Build’s residential projects. \n\nAbout the Panelists \nFranco Albarran\, AIA\nFranco has extensive knowledge in Custom Residential Architectural Design and Construction. He also has an excellent construction discipline as he coordinates the interconnectivity of architecture and construction. His job site awareness brings a higher level of control through proactive steps that elevate the value of the project. Franco‘s passion for design and construction have led him to be fully engaged in both disciplines of architecture and construction. He feels both disciplines are interconnected and provide feedback for one another. \nLuisa Aurrecoechea\, LEED AP BD+C\nLuisa Aurrecoechea is the founder and principal of LEAM Design Build\, a Houston-based design and construction firm specializing in custom residential architecture and interior design. Originally from Venezuela\, Luisa earned her architecture degree in Caracas and later completed a Master’s degree at the University of Oklahoma and a furniture design degree at the University of Buenos Aires. \nShe began her career working on a wide range of commercial and institutional projects in the United States\, including schools\, theaters\, and large-scale developments. After years in commercial architecture\, she founded her own firm to design and build thoughtfully crafted homes that blend sustainability\, practicality\, and contemporary design. \nWith over a decade of professional experience\, Luisa is passionate about guiding clients through the entire process\, from concept and design to construction\, creating homes and interiors that are both beautiful and functional. Her work emphasizes efficient building methods\, strong collaboration with clients and builders\, and spaces that support the way families live today. \nPaul Benavente\nPaul Benavente owns and operates Stella Maris Architecture\, which is located within a NASA-era building across from Space Center Houston.  He and a long-term architecture colleague serve projects in light commercial\, residential\, and institutional sectors. Paul earned degrees in Architecture and Scholastic Philosophy in 2002 and 2007\, respectively. He possesses licenses in Texas and New Mexico. \nPaul finds inspiration in domestic and international travel\, making each vacation a “study trip” in architecture.  Both Instagram and the office photo document these inspiring moments in architecture.  His education in philosophy is foundational to his practice.  The firm’s motto derives from a perennial understanding of beauty in created work: “Beauty as a Discipline of Architectural Practice.”  A study of architecture explained according to philosophical principles was nationally published in Palladiana\, 2020\, and continues to be a source of education passed on to students.  The craft of building is a passion.  Paul has visited fabrication shops of various trades and has organized open house events for trades such as terrazzo and decorative plaster. \nPaola Rubio\nPaola Rubio is the Founder and Creative Director of Paola Rubio Design Studio\, a Houston-based boutique interior design studio specializing in high-impact commercial and hospitality environments. Born and raised in Veracruz\, Mexico\, Paola began her career in architecture\, graduating with honors from the National Technological Institute of Mexico before relocating to Houston to pursue her passion for interior design. \nShe began her U.S. career at a high-end residential design firm\, where she developed a strong foundation in luxury detailing and refined aesthetics. Driven by a deeper passion for experiential spaces\, Paola transitioned into the commercial sector\, serving as Design Director at a design-build firm known for delivering complex\, high-end projects. \nNow leading her own studio\, Paola focuses on creating thoughtful\, brand-driven environments that elevate the user experience. Her work reflects a balance between creative vision and real-world execution\, shaped by her design-to-build approach. She is currently pursuing her NCIDQ certification while continuing to expand her growing portfolio of commercial projects across Texas.

During these events\, many families are in need of an emergency shelter that can provide a warm bed\, healthy meals and activities for kids. \nAspiring student architects will be challenged with designing their own “Haven”:  a community center\, which can act as an emergency shelter in times of need. \nCommunity centers can be designed around a hobby or favorite activity. Imagine an indoor skateboard park\, a musical instrument playground\, or suspended gaming stations. And\, on the flipside\, when disaster strikes and the lights go out\, the community needs a place that keeps everyone safe and comfortable. \nStudents will be led through a series of design exercises\, be able to identify storm-resistant building features\, take a tour of their site\, and design their own Haven\, a community center that could function as an emergency shelter. The Haven will be based on a theme of their choosing. \nThe workshop will be held at the Alief Neighborhood Center\, a civic hub that brings together city services and community activities under one roof. Raised above the floodplain\, it serves as both a dynamic community anchor and a safe refuge during high-water events. \nAdditional information about the class: \n\nStudents will work in teams.\nStudents will come away with an understanding of basic architectural concepts.\nStudents will tour the Alief Neighborhood Center and understand how it supports the community daily and during times of disaster.\nTeams will present their designs to the group\, explaining features and design decisions.\nArchitects & designers will be on hand to guide participants\, answer questions\, and share experiences.\nLunch will be provided.\n\nThis interactive event is perfect for students who are currently in 4th-6th grade who are excited to explore the world of architecture and unleash their creativity. Through fun activities and teamwork\, participants will learn how to design while developing essential skills in problem-solving and collaboration. DESCRIPTION:Houston’s Third Ward is a culturally rich\, historically African-American neighborhood\, that includes Texas Southern University (HBCU)\, The University of Houston (Tier 1)\, Emancipation Park\, and numerous other cultural gems. One of those is the Columbia Tap Trail\, completed in 2009\, which sits atop the abandoned Columbia Tap railroad route – originally built by enslaved people to transport cotton and sugar from Plantation to Port.  The trail connects adjacent neighborhoods and serves as a vital link in the growing Houston trail system. \nJoin us to bike along the Columbia Tap Trail\, to learn more about the trail history and identity\, safety prioritizations\, culture of the neighborhoods adjacent to the trail\, and local artists. \nBike Rental\, Meeting Location and Times\nIndividuals can rent bikes through the Eado Bike Company at 912 Saint Charles St.\, Houston TX 77003.
