DESCRIPTION:Honoring David Bucek\, FAIA\,\nWe are proud to announce that David Bucek\, FAIA will be honored with the AIA Houston Award for Career Distinction at our Holiday Party on December 15 at the Museum of Fine Arts. We are currently raising funds to purchase in David’s honor an architect designed object for the museum’s permanent design collection. \nGifts can be made online by completing and submitting a donation form by following this LINK to MFAH. \nPlease make your donation on or before November 15 so that we will have time to purchase the item for display at the party. \nThe American Institute of Architects\, Houston Design Collection\nMuseum purchase funded by friends of David Bucek\, in his honor \nAbout the Honoree: \nDavid Bucek\, FAIA\, LEED AP BD+C\, is a principal with Stern and Bucek Architects.  David specializes in new construction\, adaptive reuse\, renovation\, and historic preservation. David holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Houston\, Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture 1990 and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design 1992.  He has taught architectural design at the University of Houston and the University of Texas at Austin.  David began working for William Stern & Associates in 1992. In 1999\, David partnered with Bill Stern to form Stern and Bucek Architects. By 2009\, Stern and Bucek Architects was honored by AIA Houston as Firm of the Year. David was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows for Design/Historic Preservation in 2011. \nDavid is a preservation advocate whose body of work demonstrates exemplary support of historic architectural research and restoration in Texas communities. His work has garnered awards from the\, Advisory Council for Historic Preservation (ACHP)\, National Trust for Historic Preservation\, DOCOMOMO US\, Institute of Classical Architecture & Art\, Texas Society of Architects\, Texas Historical Commission\, Preservation Texas\, Preservation Houston\, AIA Houston and PaperCity. \nDavid is the 2024 recipient of Preservation Houston’s President’s Award\, the 2020 recipient for the Texas Society of Architects Community Service Award in Honor of James D. Pfluger FAIA\, 2006 Wharton’s Person of the Year Award bestowed by the Wharton Journal Spectator and the 2001 Texas Historical Commission’s Award of Excellence in Historic Architecture Research. \nProfessional noteworthy projects are the renovation of the Houston’s Contemporary Arts Museum\, preservation of the Frame/Harper House (Harwood Taylor)\, the Menil House\, (Phillip Johnson)\, Christ Church Cathedral\, Baker Commons at Rice University\, Eldorado Ballroom\, Sengelmann Hall in Schulenburg\, Texas\, Bellville Turnverein in Bellville\, Texas and the NASA Johnson Space Center “Apollo” Mission Operations Control Center. \nVolunteerism matches his professional career in terms of timeframe (34 years). David is the Chair of the City of Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission (HAHC). He currently serves as President and Chair of the Buildings Committee at the Heritage Society at Sam Houston Park/Houston\, and serves on the board of Houston Mod\, Wharton County Heritage Partnership\, Wharton County Courthouse Restoration/Preservation and was recently appointed to the State Board of Review\, as an Architect member\, by the Texas Historical Commission. He formerly served on the boards of Preservation Texas\, Texas Architecture Foundation\, AIA Houston\, where he served as 2016 AIA Houston President and the Architecture Center Houston Foundation\, where he served as 2023 ArCH President.

SUMMARY:Texas Medical Center Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Texas Medical Center is the largest medical center in the world. Equivalent to the 8th largest business district in the United States\, TMC has over 50 million square feet of patient care\, education\, and research space. 160\,000+ individuals visit the Texas Medical Center each day\, with more than 6 million patients treated annually. The 1000+ acres is approximately the size of Chicago inside the “Loop\,” with over 160 buildings on the main campus alone. Join our ArCH docents on this introductory architectural tour of Houston’s own modern marvel of medicine. Sites on our tour will include Baylor College of Medicine\, the new Texas Children’s Hospital Maternity Center\, MD Anderson Cancer Center\, and Methodist Research Center. \nMeet inside the Herman Professional Building\,  6400 Fannin. Parking available at the Herman Professional Building parking garage\, $13. \n  \nAIA Credit: 2.0 LU \nCourse Number: TMCWT1 \nAIA MEMBERS PLEASE NOTE: \nPer AIA National CE Standards\, any learning program approved for AIA Learning Units may award CE credit for the approved program for up to (3) years from the date of approval so long as the CES Provider is in good standing.
