SUMMARY:arcHERtect: building a treehouse & sculpting a garden
DESCRIPTION:Calling all junior architects! Get ready for an imaginative day with the National Organization of Minority Architects\, Houston and Architecture Center of Houston. \nSlide into Summer with us as we immerse ourselves in designing a treehouse sprouting from a whimsical garden. Climbing vines\, trap doors\, secret pathways\, tire swings\, and every flower under the rainbow. During this workshop\, you will have the opportunity to practice being both the architect and landscape architect\, who gets to help design a treehouse and garden\, and the client\, who will work with an aspiring Architect to design your very own treehouse and garden. At the end of workshop students will be able to share their designs and receive feedback from architects. \nSurrounded by the current exhibition at the Architecture Center of Houston\, Verdant Laboratory\, students will be able take inspiration from artist and Landscape Architect\, Falon Mihalic’s sculptures\, watercolors\, and terrariums.  Falon will share her journey into architecture and the visual arts. \nAdditional information about the class: \n\nStudents will be paired into teams of two\n Each team member will take turns playing the roles of client and architect\nParticipants will interview each other to understand their partner’s vision for their treehouse and garden.\nGuided questions and prompts will be provided to help uncover details like favorite colors\, desired rooms\, special features.\nUsing the information gathered\, each Architect will sketch a design of their partners treehouse and garden.\nStudents will build and sculpt a dreamhouse and garden based off of the sketch using clay and other materials.\nTeams will present their designs to the group\, explaining features and choices made\nArchitects & designers will be on hand to guide participants\, answer questions\, and share experiences.\n\nThis interactive event is perfect for students aged 7-12 who are excited to explore the world of architecture and unleash their creativity. Through fun activities and teamwork\, participants will learn how to design while developing essential skills in problem-solving and collaboration. SUMMARY:Sketch the Change at POST HTX
DESCRIPTION:Join Kids+Architecture for a fun filled sketching workshop at the POST HTX \, one of Houston’s award-winning entertainment center. \nPost HTX is an adaptive reuse project that transformed the historic Barbara Jordan United States Post (USPS) Office in downtown Houston into a cultural and commercial complex. The solid fortress-like structure of the USPS office\, originally designed by Wilson\, Morris\, Crain & Anderson\, the architects of Astrodome\, had immense potential\, but its industrial character posed challenges for repurposing. OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture) and Powers Brown Architecture designed the redevelopment with sensitive modifications. The new design introduced atriums with three unique monumental staircases\, massive skylights which uses materials that once originated in a NASA lab\, and the largest rooftop park in the United States. POST HTX also includes a food hall\, restaurants\, coworking spaces and offices. \nThe workshop will begin with an architect-led tour by Jeanette Shaw\, AIA\, Powers Brown Architect\, before breaking up into small groups with architects to hone your sketching skills using watercolor pencils. \nAdditional information about the class: \n\nThis is an indoor and outdoor workshop\, please dress appropriately for the weather.\nStudents will work in small groups with architects to learn and develop their sketching techniques.\nA sketch book\, watercolor pencils\, bottle of water and a snack will be provided for registered students. Adults are welcome to participate and parents are welcome to stay to pick up when the workshop concludes.\nGeared towards ages 7-12.\nParking options at POST are $5 per hour after the first 20 minutes\, which are free.\n\nPlease plan to arrive early to allow time to park and check in. SUMMARY:The Haven: Designing for Community and Disaster
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of imagination and creation with the National Organization of Minority Architects\, Houston’s Project Pipeline\, and Architecture Center Houston’s Kids+ Architecture Committee. \nLiving in the Bayou City\, we are used to experiencing flooding\, hurricanes\, strong winds\, and freezes that can cause our homes to lose power or damage them. During these events\, many families are in need of an emergency shelter that can provide a warm bed\, healthy meals and activities for kids. \nAspiring student architects will be challenged with designing their own “Haven”:  a community center\, which can act as an emergency shelter in times of need. \nCommunity centers can be designed around a hobby or favorite activity. Imagine an indoor skateboard park\, a musical instrument playground\, or suspended gaming stations. And\, on the flipside\, when disaster strikes and the lights go out\, the community needs a place that keeps everyone safe and comfortable. \nStudents will be led through a series of design exercises\, be able to identify storm-resistant building features\, take a tour of their site\, and design their own Haven\, a community center that could function as an emergency shelter. The Haven will be based on a theme of their choosing. \nThe workshop will be held at the Alief Neighborhood Center\, a civic hub that brings together city services and community activities under one roof. Raised above the floodplain\, it serves as both a dynamic community anchor and a safe refuge during high-water events. \nAdditional information about the class: \n\nStudents will work in teams.\nStudents will come away with an understanding of basic architectural concepts.\nStudents will tour the Alief Neighborhood Center and understand how it supports the community daily and during times of disaster.\nTeams will present their designs to the group\, explaining features and design decisions.\nArchitects & designers will be on hand to guide participants\, answer questions\, and share experiences.\nLunch will be provided.\n\nThis interactive event is perfect for students who are currently in 4th-6th grade who are excited to explore the world of architecture and unleash their creativity. Through fun activities and teamwork\, participants will learn how to design while developing essential skills in problem-solving and collaboration.
