From stand-alone residences to corporate interiors and furniture and product design\, the firm’s work illustrates the modern tenet that\, as Mies van der Rohe stated\, “The space within becomes the reality of the building”. \n \n  \n \nAbout the Speaker\n \nNew York-based architect Lee F. Mindel\, FAIA\, and founding member of SheltonMindel is regarded as one of the top American interpreters of classic modernism in the industry today with over 60 industry awards. Guided by principles of light\, nature and simplicity\, the firm’s designs transcend form and function to become works of art. In 2011\, Mindel was awarded the prestigious Cooper Hewitt National Design Award by First Lady Michelle Obama in the White House\, and in 2021\, was one of the few professionals inducted into the AD100 Hall of Fame for contributions in both categories: Architecture and Interior Design. Mindel regularly appears as a Design Titan on Elle Decor’s A-List\, and in 2024\, was featured in Galerie Magazine’s roundup of Creative Minds for his art and design space\, Galerie56. \nGalerie56 was founded in 2022\, occupying the ground floor of Herzog de Meuron’s much lauded 56 Leonard tower. The AIA award-winning space\, designed by SheltonMindel\, celebrates the intersection of art\, architecture\, and design with a diverse series of exhibitions featuring international artists\, galleries\, and movements. Galerie56 reflects the deep American ethos of inclusion and diversity. \nMindel has served on various AIA committees for 4 years\, and has been a juror of AIA Awards in the Architecture and Interior categories for 3 years. \nMindel received his Master of Architecture from Harvard University in 1976 after obtaining his Bachelor of Arts\, Cum Laude\, with Distinction in Architecture\, at the University of Pennsylvania.  \n \n  \nSally Walsh Lectures are supported by an endowed fund of the Houston Architecture Foundation. \nThe lectures are dedicated to the memory of one of Houston’s most distinguished interior designers\, Sally Walsh\, who brought modern design to Houston and became an inspiration to a whole generation of Houston architects and designers. \nAll Sally Walsh lectures are free and open to the public.
