SUMMARY:Concrete Cosmos: Composing Skate Architecture
DESCRIPTION:In Concrete Cosmos: Composing Skate Architecture\, Shane Yee presents skate architecture qua architecture\, framing the skatepark as a paradigmatic yet unacknowledged achievement of the contemporary moment\, characterized by adaptive reuse\, the blurring of public and private space\, an emphasis on lifestyle recreation\, and the ascent of subcultural practices into mainstream culture. Skate spaces manifest in fluid\, naturalistic configurations\, converging with land art and anticipating parametric/ digital aesthetics; yet despite this sophistication\, the language and principles of the discipline remain largely unarticulated. \nDrawing on a half-century history of skatepark design (1976-2026) and his own work at Skate Ecosystems\, Yee offers a chronological series of architectural close readings\, examining design intentions\, ordering logics\, and formal arrangements. The lecture establishes skate architecture as an emergent field with significant cultural\, spatial\, and spiritual implications\, capable of producing elevated human experiences. \n\nAbout Shane Yee \nShane Yee earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree from NewSchool of Architecture & Design in San Diego\, California. Mr. Yee has a broad range of experiences and capabilities in all phases of project planning\, design and construction- from acquisition through operations and maintenance. He has designed award-winning projects including residential\, multifamily\, civic\, religious\, master planning\, and of course\, skate spaces. As an officer in the United States Navy Civil Engineer Corps\, Mr. Yee expertly designed & managed DOD projects with a total value of 100+ million to include Design-Build\, DBB\, and MILCON construction. DESCRIPTION:Join lifelong skateboarder and architectural historian Ted Barrow on a walking tour of the highlights of Houston’s Modernist and Late-Modernist architecture through a skateboarder’s perspective. The tour will cover key plazas and buildings which became local\, state-wide\, and eventually global skateboarding destinations from the late 1980’s to today. \n\nAbout Ted Barrow \nTheodore (Ted) Barrow is an art historian\, writer\, curator\, and lecturer whose work bridges academic scholarship and contemporary currents. Born in Bolinas\, California\, he holds a Ph.D. in art history from the Graduate Center\, CUNY\, where he explored the Florida paintings of Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent through an ecocritical lens. Barrow has taught at Barnard College\, Baruch College\, City College of New York\, and the University of San Francisco. DESCRIPTION:Join ASLA Texas and Architecture Center Houston for a tour of the Ismaili Center Garden on October 21 at 9:30 am with Thomas Woltz of Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects. \nIn 2019\, Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects\, in partnership with Farshid Moussavi Architects and AKT II Engineers\, and DLR as the AOR\, was awarded the commission for an extensive\, nine-acre landscape design project for the first Ismaili Center in the United States. The Ismaili Center\, Houston\, the seventh Ismaili Center worldwide\, builds on the mission of the Ismaili community to advance pluralism\, public understanding\, and civic outreach in communities around the world. The Ismaili Center\, Houston\, will host social and cultural gatherings\, foster intellectual engagement and reflection\, and act as a sanctum for spiritual contemplation. The Center’s monumental architecture sits at the top of a series of terraces that step down to the Buffalo Bayou\, reflecting a topographical and hydrological relationship to rivers that dates back thousands of years. In 2011\, Thomas was invested into the American Society of Landscape Architects Council of Fellows\, among the highest honors achieved in the profession and was named the Design Innovator of the Year by the Wall Street Journal Magazine. He has also been recognized as one of the most creative people in business by Fast Company and with the Land for People Award by the Trust for Public Land ― and was a 2025 Frederic Church Award honoree. Thomas currently serves as the Board of Directors Co-Chair for The Cultural Landscape Foundation.

Create the world’s first fully enclosed and air-conditioned sports stadium in a city known for punishing heat and humidity. \nTurning that idea into reality required vision\, experimentation\, and persistence. Architects and engineers turned that idea into reality through vision\, experimentation\, and persistence\, pushing past existing limits to create a structure unlike anything the world had seen.
