DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Buzz: What Design Week Reveals About the Future of Interior Architecture \nEvery year\, Chicago Design Days and NeoCon introduce hundreds of new furniture products\, materials\, finishes\, and workplace design concepts. But which innovations represent meaningful shifts in interior architecture—and which are simply this year’s aesthetic trends? This session examines key observations from Chicago Design Week through three lenses: ephemeral trends\, enduring shifts\, and emerging innovations. Participants will explore how circular design principles are reshaping furniture planning and specification\, how neuroinclusive design is influencing occupant well-being\, and how manufacturers are responding to evolving expectations around sustainability\, flexibility\, material transparency\, and human-centered design. With more than 25 years of experience dedicated exclusively to high-performance interiors\, she has worked across a broad spectrum of specialized facilities\, including academic medical centers\, community hospitals\, behavioral health facilities\, public health agencies\, private clinics\, research laboratories\, vivaria\, and corporate science campuses. \nA Certified Healthcare Interior Designer and Certified Design Futurist\, Necia is recognized for her expertise in translating complex clinical\, operational\, and regulatory requirements into innovative environments that support the future of healthcare delivery and scientific discovery. She is a respected leader within the design profession and a frequent advocate for advancing healthcare and science environments through design leadership\, education\, and professional service. SUMMARY:HXD Week: Electrolit U.S. Headquarters Tour
DESCRIPTION:A collaborative team of architects based in Guadalajara and Houston has designed the U.S. headquarters of Mexican beverage brand Electrolit. \nThe structure they chose to begin their journey in Houston—a low-slung\, formerly industrial Spanish Revival slab located on the banks of Buffalo Bayou—resonated with the ethos and cultural identity of the company. The objective from the outset was to create a contemporary workspace imbued with the sophistication and relaxed character of residential architecture\, balancing the industrial nature of the existing building with a warm palette of natural materials reminiscent of Mexican living. With this ambition in mind\, the architects stripped the existing concrete structure down to its bones\, correcting and repairing some of the abuses that it had undergone during its many lives. The proposal consists of a series of volumetric\, light wooden boxes that house smaller programs and inhabit the industrial space as sculptures\, creating and lending proportion to the spaces around them. The main entry leads into a foyer bounded on one side by a monumental wood-clad staircase. Past this stair\, the space opens into a double-height lounge and flexible workspace. The stair leads to a mezzanine where the CEO’s office and a meeting room overlook the office. Throughout\, diffused natural light emitted by glass-block windows is supplemented by existing skylights. The team worked to deploy warm tones and raw materials in order to strike a balance between the rough and the delicate. The result\, aided by the thoughtful use of natural light\, is a relaxed and subdued atmosphere that stands in opposition to the stridence of contemporary corporate vernacular. \nThrough its careful consideration of existing conditions and its balance between the industrial and the intimate\, the project also manages to strike a different balance\, between the company’s origins in Mexico and its new location in Houston.
